[net.tv.drwho] cute phrase + query

dub@pur-phy.UUCP (Dwight U. Bartholomew) (03/06/84)

Another cute phrase heard in the episode "The Face of

Evil" shown onto WTTW (Chicago) last Sunday.

	"Destroy and be free ..."

Also, I can vaguely remember two Dr. Who episodes
seen when I was young.
1) Aliens are being forceably controlled against their
wills to rob banks, kill and such. I remember one scene
in particular where the aliens (exiting from a tunnel)
are confronted by the Doctor and plead with him to
explain why humans are making them do such bad things.

2) An evil scientist has created jet black "dolls" that
can kill people. One scene stands out: a Ministry
official is driving home with a doll in the back seat.
Heat from the engines activates the doll, but the
driver reaches his destination before the doll can
kill him. Later at home the doll strangles him (a rather
   humorous scene as I recall.)

Which Doctor (#1 2 or 3) is in these episodes?

		D. Bartholomew

Both the stories mentioned are Pertwee stories. The one where the aliens
are forced to rob banks etc. is called Ambassadors of Death (I think) and
the one with the dolls is the very first show with the Master in it. Don't
really remember the name of that one either.

I can't find any Dr. Who story that matches this description.

This sounds more like an episode of the Avengers. However it is
probably "Spearhead from Space" featuring Dr. #3 Jon Pertwee.
The synopsis follows.

A shower of meteorites falls on Essex and the Brigadier and his newly
recruited scientist Liz Shaw, from Cambridge, enlist the aid of a
physically changed Dr. to investigate the phenomenon. Factory boss
Channing is a Nestene-a member of an alien collective intelligence
which colonises planets by inhabiting native life forms. Nestenes
have a special ability to control plastic; Channing is making Autons,
plastic mannikins able to fight and kill, controlled by the Nestene
conciousness. He has also been making plastic facsimiles of Cabinet
members to enable him to gain world domination. The Dr. manages to
defeat the Nestene as the Autons go on a killing rampage. He agrees to
work for UNIT as a scientific advisor, in return for facilities to repair
the TARDIS, grounded by the Time Lords on 20th century Earth. The
brigadier gave him a sprightly yellow roadster-Bessie.

No I don;t think so. From the story synopsis of the Ambassadors
of Death it doesn't sound like it fits the description.

The Ambassadors of Death; third story with Jon Pertwee.

Seven months after leaving Mars, the *Probe 7* ship has still not returned
to Earth and a *Recovery 7* rocket is dispatched to investigate.
*Recovery 7* returns to earth but, after landing, the astronauts are
kidnapped by men masquerading as UNIT forces. Liz Shaw notices the ship's
geiger counter is at maximum; the crew would normally have been killed
by the radiation. The Dr. is convinced that the crew are not human.
He makes a solo space mission and finds the real astronauts held aboard
a large alien space ship. The captain of the alien ship asks for the
return of his "ambassadors" or he will destroy the planet. The three
recaptured aliens are exchanged.

Incidentally the show with the mannekins that I described yesterday
"Spearhead from Space" was the first story featuring Jon Pertwee.
The Autons (the mannekins) also appeared 4 stories later (the start
of the 8th season) in the first show featuring the Master. It was called
"Terror of the Autons." The scene described could have come from either
story but the first gets my vote because it had mannekins replacing
cabinet ministers and "government ministers" were specifically mentioned
in the description.

(If you have a Pythonesque sense of humour you'll realise there's not much
difference betweena cabinet minister and a mannekin.)
