In 'The Five Doctors', Dr. Who reincarnation #2 or #3 (I don't recall which) shows up in an old turn of the century model car. This same car is in the first Tom Baker episode. I have only seen a couple of the pre-Tom Baker episodes (and those many-many years ago), so I don't know the history of this car. Is it the Doctor's, or does he simply borrow it? If it is his, how does he get it in the Tardis ( or is IT the tardis before the chameleon circuit broke)? Why is it never seen again after the first Tom Baker episode (the one with the living robot)? Much thanx in advance, Murray at Intel - t4test

The cute little yellow car seen in 'Robot' (the first Tom Baker episode) is called Bessie, and except for that episode, is only used by Jon Pertwee as the doctor. ( 'Robot' is the episode where Jon Pertwee regenerates into Tom Baker.) I'm not sure he ever puts the car in the TARDIS; I thought he left it on Earth, at UNIT. -deborah gronke bennett ucbvax!atd!t:deborah

Each of the incarnations of the Doctor has particular fancies. Tom Baker's Doctor had the scarf and other clothes. (For all of the Doctors, their clothes have been different and tend to be their trade-marks.) Many Doctors have "things" as trademarks also. The 2nd Doctor used to always carry around a wooden flute (it has another name, i know) and the 3rd Doctor came up with the sonic screwdriver (that Tom Baker's Doctor continued to use <he being the 4th Doctor>.) Jon Pertwee (#3) also had Bessy, his modified turn-of-the-century car. I just loved the way that at the flip of a switch Bessy would go into overdrive and pass the Brigedear's jeep. In Jon Pertwee's last episode, "Planet of Spiders", we even see another of the Doctor's tinkerings, a futuristic flying car. When Tom Baker took over, the producers, I gather, most have thought that if the Doctor was going to be galavanting across the universe, he couldn't be constantly dragging Bessy around and so Bessy no longer appeared in the shows. With Peter Davidson's Doctor (#5), we see him put on new clothes (exit the scarf, although I recall that it was often being ripped up or burned apart in Baker episodes so it may yet return, we can only hope), chuck the sonic screwdriver and pick up a cricket club. I really have no idea of what the first Doctor had for trademarks. Anybody have any ideas? D. Bartholomew

The car belonged to Dr. Who #3 (Jon Pertwee). It was a perfectly ordinary car except that he was supposed to have souped it up so that it was very fast. It is not and never was a tardis. In reality (is there such a thing?) the car belongs to Jon Pertwee who is something of a car enthusiast. I have an idea it's not really old at all but I'm not certain. It was Pertwee's idea to have the car providing his character with something distinctive to get around in while exiled on Earth. -- From the Tardis of Mark Callow msc@qubix.UUCP, decwrl!qubix!msc@Berkeley.ARPA ...{decvax,ucbvax,ihnp4}!decwrl!qubix!msc, ...{ittvax,amd70}!qubix!msc

I nominate "Brigedear" as the most original spelling of the year!

Oh!! If you must be picky: it is brigadier.

It is pretty much a standard car. I have no idea what happened to it after the "Robot" series. Joe Kalash kalash@berkeley ucbvax!kalash
