In response to your question, "who was the watcher in 'Logopolis', the answer is that it was the doctor himself. You will remember that the doctor (Tom Baker) had a conversation with the watcher early on in the show. The watcher told him that he was going to be killed and that inorder to preserve his future regenerations, it had been arranged (apparemtly by the Time Lords) to have the doctor's future self protected. (In one of the early Tom Baker showswhen the President of the high council was killed it was shown that if a time lord is injured severly enough, he cannot regenerate, the President had one regeneration left but was killed by the shot) If these measures hadn't been taken, the doctor's lives would have ended when he fell from the tower.

I'm glad this is on the net... I wanted some comments on my own observations. At the end of "Planet of the Spiders", the third Doctor (Pertwee) starts his regeneration. Apparently there were some problems, since another Time Lord (K'An Po, I believe) had to give his regeneration a "boost". The Doctor has always had trouble with his regenerations. The first Doctor had waited almost 700 years to regenerate. The second was put to death (i.e. regeneration) by the High Council of the Time Lords and banished to 20th Century Earth. The third had been exposed to radiation and it took him about 3 months to get around to regenerating, therefore he needed help. Apparently, the Time Lords saw fit to give the fourth Doctor some help by sending The Watcher, his Next Self. Perhaps our friends across the water can help by telling us how Peter D. becomes Colin Baker? -- -The Parker Hobbit a.k.a. Thomas R. SPOILER (read no further at your own risk) I'm told by a rather reliable source that the Peter Davison-Colin Baker change comes about by the drowning of Peter Davison. No other details available and since they only finished shooting the show last week it may be awhile before anything more is heard. There is also a plan afoot to shoot a Who story here in the U.S. - again no other information available except that Colin Baker is rather eager to do it. (Maybe it has something to do with the welcome he got at several of the cons) Talks are also in progress to see if Patrick Trouton (the second Dr) and the actor who plays the Brigadier would be amenable to doing a show with Colin Baker. Jon Pertwee may also be involved. These are of course rumors but I believe them to be fairly reliable. I take full responsibility for any spelling errors.
