>The Soviet news agency TASS reported today that the Soviet Union would not >participate in the 1984 Summer Olympic Games at Los Angeles, CA. GOOD RIDDANCE!!!!! I think that there are some advantages for having the Russians out of the Olympics: 1. Some people may get the wrong idea that the Soviet System that is so successful in cultivating great athletes, is not that bad. The Olympics offers a great form for Soviet propaganda. The Soviets are loosing an opportunity to show the world "how great" is their system. 2. The Soviets will have less KGB agents on the loose. The major disadvantage in the Soviet absence: Russian athletes who desire to defect, will not have their chance. -- Yosi Hoshen Bell Laboratories Naperville, Illinois (312)-979-7321 Mail: ihnp4!ihuxn!jho

> Does this mean that we'll actually have an amatuer Olympics this year? > Michael Ward, NCAR/SCD Not while the good Ol' US of A is still in it. Do you really think Carl Lewis and Mary Decker are amateur track athletes? Lewis admits to making close to $200K as a track athlete last year ("expenses" plus track-related endorsements).

>> Does this mean that we'll actually have an amatuer Olympics >> this year? >> Did you see the piece in 20/20 where they showed that "amateur" athletics was big business. Carl Lewis could make something like $ 1 million this year from product endorsements and the "consulting". Sure makes me wish that I had stayed on the Track team in school. The peanut farmer did not start it. Hitler started it in the thirties.

Has anyone considered the possibility that the pull out has nothing whatever to do with politics, or security and has everything to do with the new steroids tests that have been implemented? Sure would look bad if their atheletes failed to bring home the gold or were disqualified because of steroid usage.
