[net.tv.drwho] Terry Nation inquiry

<Do not remove this line under penality of law>
The other night cable channel WOR showed the movie "Dr. Who and the
Daleks" with Peter Cushing, which I hadn't seen for several years.
This time around, I noticed something in the credits which I hadn't
paid any attention to before; it said : "Based on the BBC Series by
Terry Nation". Can someone who knows more about the history of the
show tell me what Terry Nation's connection with it was ? Did Nation
work on "Dr. Who" before, or after, "The Avengers", and on what
episodes ? I would be especially interested in seeing those shows, if
they are among the ones which are still in circulation.

"Doctor Who and the Daleks", and "The Dalek Invasion of Earth :2150" the
two Doctor movies starring Peter Cushing, were both adapted from serials
written by Terry Nation, who first thought up the Daleks and has written
almost all the Dalek serials. In fact, Doctor Who and the Daleks was the
second ever Doctor Who serial, "Unearthly Child" being the very first.

Some movie company got the rights to make Doctor Who movies, and produced
those two in the sixties with Peter Cushing. Now a bigger star, Cushing
was then not that great, and played a rather wimpy Doctor. In particular,
to make the movies more modular, the producers made the Doctor a human
scientist who had invented a time machine, not an alien at all.

The third movie was never made, but some people consider Peter Cushing
to be one of the seven actors to play Doctor Who. This is a point of
contention among fans. He's certainly the biggest name actor, with
Davison a far second.

One item of note: Where the BBC holds the rights to Doctor Who,
Terry Nation still retains the rights to Daleks!
