My "calendar" gives this line: 5/21 DEC announces PDP-8 Do you know the year? -- Lee Dickey, University of Waterloo. (ljdickey@watmath.UUCP) ... {allegra, decvax} !watmath!ljdickey

I'll put in my recollection of 1964. The oldest PDP-8 brochure I have is dated 12/64, while the PDP-5 brochure is dated 9/63. DEC wouldn't stoop so low as to continue to sell PDP-5's when their replacement was already announced ?! :-) I also remember seeing a PDP-8 at the IRE (pre IEEE) show in New York, most likely Spring 1964. The computer was contemporaneous with the mini-skirt, hence the name mini-computer. carl lowenstein marine physical lab, u.c.san diego

According to the book "Computer Engineering: A DEC view of Hardware Systems Design", the PDP-8 was first *shipped* in April of 1965. I would then assume that the announcement was made as much as a year earlier, on May 21, 1964. -- Bob Hoffman Pitt Computer Science
