[net.misc] When was the PDP 8 announced?

ljdickey@watmath.UUCP (Lee Dickey) (05/20/84)

My "calendar" gives this line:
5/21 DEC announces PDP-8
Do you know the year?

I'll put in my recollection of 1964. The oldest PDP-8 brochure I have
is dated 12/64, while the PDP-5 brochure is dated 9/63. DEC wouldn't
stoop so low as to continue to sell PDP-5's when their replacement was
already announced ?! :-) I also remember seeing a PDP-8 at the
IRE (pre IEEE) show in New York, most likely Spring 1964. The computer
was contemporaneous with the mini-skirt, hence the name mini-computer.

According to the book "Computer Engineering: A DEC view of Hardware
Systems Design", the PDP-8 was first *shipped* in April of 1965. I
would then assume that the announcement was made as much as a year
earlier, on May 21, 1964.
