[net.tv.drwho] Romana II

sharp@kpnoa.UUCP (05/16/84)

Romana II was played by Lalla Ward, who was married to Tom Baker.
The British porn merchant Paul Raymond publishes a nudie magazine which
features "celebrity nudes", usually gleaned from old, unpublished photo
sessions or unreleased movies, sometimes using high-speed boats whizzing
past topless beaches in France ... etc.,etc. .. all very "scuzzy" (to use
an American word). They once had a feature on Lalla. You don't really
want to know........

Hello,

In the Portland, Or. area we are currently seeing the Tom Baker episodes
and this question has come to mind. On Tue. I saw the final episode of the
Key to Time series (The Armageddon Factor) where the princess turns into the
sixth segment of the key to time. In the next show (Destiny of the Daleks)
Romana regenerates. Well, I missed this episode so imagine my surprise when
I see (on Thu.) the princess, wearing a long coat and scarf, captured by
daleks. Now I quickly figured out that this was Romana II and what I would
like to know is ... Was there an explanation for this new form or did they
forget that Lalla Ward was the princess in the previous season?

From previous discussion in this group I am aware that Lalla Ward was
married to Tom Baker and would not expect a mistake such as this. Also, why
did Romana need to regenerate?

Romana I decided to rejuvenate and use Princess Astra's
appearance as her model. The Doctor was quite confused
when Romana II appeared and even had her try some other
bodies first before agreeing to let her look like the
Princess. Apparently she had little or no problem during
her regeneration and could even select the body style she
wanted.

The first episode has the princess Astra show up on the TARDIS. Initially
the Doctor is suprised but is told that she rejuvinated herself (Don't be
rediculous, only timelords can rejuvin...Romana?). At this point she is
even dressed like Astra. She tries several more forms including coming
out dressed as the Doctor himself, but she finally settles for a more
feminine form of the Doctor's raincoat and scarf but still with Astra's
face. Finally the Doctor accepts her.

Perhaps, Romana's easy regeneration was due to the fact that it was
done voluntarily? The Doctor, so far, has only regenerated when he was
near death or when forced by the Time Lords, or so I have been told.

The episode you missed opens with Romana regenerating in Princess Astra's
form. The only explanation given is that "it looked good on Princess
Astra" (Romana re. her new appearance). Actually, Romana modeled several
new looks for The Doctor before settling on that one.

My favorite line in the episode with Romana's regeneration is:

"You liked this body well enough on Princess Astra..."
"But you can't go around with someone else's body!"
"Why not? We're not going back there!"

				Happy times and places,
