I saw Tom Baker on a fund drive for New Hampshire public TV last fall. Although I haven't seen him anywhere since, he didn't seem very reclusive. At any rate, it was an interview conducted by our local station, not a promotional thing by the BBC. Ken Varnum

Couple Tom Baker notes: he was recently on an episode of NBC's "Remington Steele" portraying an Interpol cop gone nutso... ...he didn't really do much, snarled alot and fired a gun. He did, however, give a little speech to a hostage he was holding as to why he was doing what he was doing...it was pretty amusing, cause he kept throwing in "Whoish" mannerisms...hard to get used to him as the bad guy, tho. Also, I have a friend who went to the Who convention in Chicago last November...she said, basically, that Tom Baker was an egotistical jerk...he refused to appeasr on stage with any of the other Doctors, and he refused to appear in the episode "The Five Doctors" because he didn't wanna share the limelight. Also, when he was talking at the con, he apparently had a holier then tho attitude...ah well, so it goes... Robby=Baby MACC

As I posted once before, although - due to a transmission error - I'm not sure anyone saw it. Reports that I had from a friend who saw Baker at the Who conference in Chicago last year, claimed that he was more than reclusive, he was arrogant and an egotist. Now, whether or not this was an act to his audience is open for debate...but it is true that he does not wish to "share the spotlight" with the other Doctors. (i.e. his refusal to appear on the same panel with the other three living Doctor's at the conference...he told the conference commitee that either he gets his own seperate "on stage" discussion with the audience, or he's not coming. (Those words were obtained by a person on the planning committee for the Who-a-thon.) That combined with his "video taped" appearance on "The Five Doctors" sorta makes one wonder.... ...everything goes to everybody's head sometime.... Now Robbie: I didn't really say he was an egotistical jerk--although that was the assessment of several convention-related people I talked to. I thought he was egotistical, but definitely not a jerk. He was very patient and charming even when mobbed by fame-crazed animal-like people. His public personality is very Dr Who-ish, complete with all the wonderful facial expressions and great smile. I got the impression that hardly anyone gets to see his private personality. As for the 5 Doctors, he gave two different reasons why he didn't appear: twice he said that he had been too possessive of the role, and didn't like to see others playing it; and once he said he didn't want to appear because he had just quit as the Doctor when they began shooting 5 Doctors, and didn't want to play the part any more. In a short interview for Philadelphia PBS station WHYY, he allowed as how he didn't think too much of the Dr. Who scripts. One wonders how he survived his appearance on Remington Steele, which has some of the worst scripts I have ever seen. (The "non-zany adventures of Robin Hood" weren't too good, either...) --Sally Handy-Zarnstorff AT&T Bell Laboratories, Short Hills, NJ ..!ihnp4!hlexa!shz Trivia fans: What was "Newton's revenge"? and what's "all the rage in Trenton, New Jersey"?

Sally-Poo --- Oh dear, am I misquoting you again? My apologies to you and to those I've misled with my misquotes...but one's memory does tend to blur with time... ...my theory is that Baker must be friends with Pierce Brosnon, otherwise he never would have condesended to such a role....(or roll...)
