I just want to do a quick survey.
How many people would like to see Adric blasted into atoms in his
first episode?

I liked Adric, but I wasn't displeased when he bit the dust trying to "save" Earth. But a lot of my friends really disliked K-9, and were extremely pleased when K-9 left the show. How do you other Doctor Who fans feel about K-9? Dave Marquardt St. Olaf College Northfield, MN 55057 ...ihnp4!stolaf!marquard

Did you say alot of people hated K-9!!??
Please name these disloyal who-fans so they may be completely disintegrated!!
EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!
(I swear if I ever heard about Adric's gold star for mathematical excellence
one more time, I would have flown to England and killed him personally!!!!!)
BRING BACK K-9!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LIKED adric. When he snuffed it in Earthshock I was upset. One of the big
advantages to the little snot was that he was constantly able to upstage
the Good Dr. and make him look silly. The Dr.'s are always in need being
brought down a couple of notches. That's why I also prefer K-9 and Lalla
Ward/Romana to Sarah Jane or any of the other female screamers. Intelligent
cohorts make for interesting banter.

Let's see if I can respond to both:
Adric: he's a winer...I'm amazed he doesn't wet himself
when something goes wrong...
K-9: at first, I despised him because I thought he was
linking science fiction to Saturday morning cartoons...
then, as time went on, I realized (well, in my mind at least)
that K-9 was a wonderfully, infantile and eccentric creation..
exactly what the Doctor would want in a companion...I feel
now, that he was the perfect Watson to the Doctor's Holmes,
and was distressed that he left. (But, nothing good lasts
forever, eh? Besides, that's the nature of the show: constant
change...only the TARDIS remains the same.)
Side note: anyone out their hear of an entire season of the Tom Baker
era that we aren't seeing because of legalities that came up
in an actor's strike in Britain when that was made?

I loved the earlier shows with K-9. Especially the ones where Leela would pat him on the head and say 'nice doggy'. I think my favorite episode with K-9 was, I believe the second 'key of time' segment, the one where they go to the simi-medeval planet and the doctor trys to make an android impersonate the king. (I forget the title.) One of the king's aids was terrified of K-9, backing away with a 'Nice doggy, Niiiiice doggy'. This is the one that opens with K-9 beating the doctor at chess. For some reason, though, K-9 seemed to lose some of his (its?) personality in the later shows with the second Romana. This may be personal prejudice, I liked Leela and the first Romana much better than Romana II, (Mary Tamm in her white gown.... Ooooooooh boy!) and this may had colored my perceptions. Anyone seen any of the segments from the 1980 BBC series, 'K-9 and company'? -- "Trivia is important." Ron Christian Watkins-Johnson Co. San Jose, Calif. (...ios!wjvax!ron)

First off, Adric was OK, especially when Nyssa and Tegan (sp?) were around.
I think on his own, Adric would have been a little much to take. By the way,
in case it isn't obvious from previous messages on the subject, Adric
buys the farm in "Earthshock", while trying to save the Earth.
Second, I absoutely LOVED K-9, though for a while his voice was different,
and pretty whimpy; I like the original voice (which returned in later
episodes, I believe) MUCH better. In any case, I thought that K-9 was
pretty wonderful. He was so good at showing up the Doctor.
I want one for my very own (I heard once that you can actually buy them
somewhere. I suspect they're not QUITE as sophistcated as the Dr.'s,
however).
K-9: Unable to prognosticate in matters
concerning The Doctor.
Leela: What does that mean?
K-9: I can't tell.
