Does anybody know how the BBC markets story packages to PBS stations? We were seeing Peter Davison but they switched to Jon Pertwee at the end of Davison's second season (one to go, yet). I had just assumed that they would have bought all of Davison's shows in a group (with the possible exception of the one where he regenerates). I was real suprised to see Pertwee the next night after "The King's Demons" (plus, I wanted to see more of Kamelion(sp?), he looked like one of the more promising characters I've seen so far!). Grumble, grumble. Then, as if that wasn't strange enough, the first time we see Pertwee is Episode 1 of "Inferno" which is the last story of his first season (??!?!). Does anybody know if there is any specific way they break them up to market? Do they do it the same everywhere? I'm going to try and talk to someone here and find out what went on, but I'm curious if this is they way it happened anywhere else. As far as I know, the plan now is to run Pertwee through Baker (again since we had Baker first) and then through Davison again. Does anybody in this country get Hartnell or Troughton? I've read that some of these have been lost at the BBC. Do they sell what they have to the U.S.? ---- -King ARPA:ables@ut-ngp UUCP:{ctvax,ihnp4,kpno,seismo}!ut-sally!ut-ngp!ables

The early Dr. Who's are unlikely to be seen very often for two reasons: All episodes of the first two doctors were in black and white (a hard sell on TV these days). 131 episodes are missing from those 6 years (out of maybe 180). Worse than that, episodes are missing from almost every story line, except the very first one, some of the Dalek story lines, and two thirds of Troughton's last season. I'd be very happy to watch the available Hartnell and Troughton (complete) serials in black and white, and I suspect that most Dr. Who fans would agree. If the choice is between not seeing the serials at all and seeing them in B&W it seems pretty clear to me what the fans would want. I wonder where the attitude that B&W is such a "hard sell" comes from. There are a lot of old U.S. programs which are still very popular (I Love Lucy, for example). Perhaps if we put some pressure on our PBS stations (and the BBC?) we could convince them otherwise. -- John Bruner (S-1 Project, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) MILNET: jdb@mordor.ARPA [jdb@s1-c] (415) 422-0758 UUCP: ...!ucbvax!dual!mordor!jdb ...!decvax!decwrl!mordor!jdb
