Jon Pertwee was in hospital after his regeneration, and stole the tuxedo (and the car) from one of the physicians there, in order to make his escape. Tom Baker tried on a variety of outfits before going off to fight the robot. (Romana II also tried on a variety of outfits after her regeneration.) Peter Davison happened across his clothes while grepping the TARDIS for the Zero Room. The Doctor has always been a cricket fan: Tom Baker demonstrated his bowling form to Sarah Jane, and I hear tell that references to cricket go all the way back to William Hartnell. The way I remember it was that she "tried on" a variety of regenerations before deciding on that of Princess Astra from the previous episode. I want to know how they explain her changing that many times!
