[net.tv.drwho] Is Dr. Who named Fred?

wwb@ihuxn.UUCP (Walt Barnes) (08/23/84)

<Fred?>

I just finished rewatching "The Armageddon Factor." I noticed
something that I missed the first three times I saw it. The Dr.
bumps into another time lord (I don't remember his name, he was the
enginner type.) who claimed to have gone to school with the Dr.
This other time load kept calling the Dr. by the name Fred, until
the Dr. corrected him. Then this other character said, "Oh yes, you
went of and got your doctorate." The Dr. never disputed this other
time lord's claim about their having gone to school together, or the
name FRED.

Is the Dr's real name Fred?

Actually, the other time lord called him 'Theet' - short for what he
called him at first, 'Theta Sigma' (British pronounciation, 'Theeta
Sigma'). In the book version, this is explained as a sort of code
name, and not his 'real' name. When in the series was his 'real'
name revealed? I have never heard it, myself.

This is most interesting. I have a friend who claims
to have heard the Doctor called "Fred" by Drax. I never
heard this myself, but she seemed quite insistant.
...all things are possible.

It's not really Fred but considering the accent Drax had it might be the
closest thing you could make out. In several books on Dr. Who the Time
Lords are given names (possibly for reference by the matrix?) which are
mathematical symbols. The Dr's is the third derivative summation x squared
and when I saw the show the dialog went something like this
Drax: Fete, Fete Sigma! It is you.

I'm sure this would be alot clearer if the terminal would draw the symbols
but then what would happed to man's search for knowledge?
