In our area, PBS shows one episode of Dr. Who every night. Over the last year I have seen all of the Tom Baker programs and a couple of months ago they started showing a mish-mash of the Pertwee programs. I haven't seen any of the other doctors, and I am not up on the history of Dr. Who enough to understand some of the differences between the apparent capabilities of the two doctors. Therefore some of my comments may be based on ignorance, I would welcome any enlightenment. 1) Pertwee's doctor seems to be alternately a criminal from or a subject of the Time Lords on Galifry (sp?). But in either case his actions seem to be directed very strongly by them. Baker's doctor was a free agent, several times even saving the Time Lords (the roles almost seemed to be reversed). I like Baker's role better, what brought about the change? 2) The Master in the Pertwee programs seems to be an almost constant companion whereas he only showed up rarely in the Baker programs. What brought about this change? 3) My primary observation: The Pertwee programs seem to be infested with pompous ***holes. I find that I don't enjoy these programs as much, not because of an objection to Pertwee, but because I always seem to end up angry -- I just want to NUKE all those jerks and get on with the business at hand (really, I am not a violent man). The Baker programs had a much better variety of characters, with many actually welcoming and helping the Doctor. Even the villians were usually intelligent. Any comments? Raan Young (hp-pcd!raan)
