Well, WTTW in Chicago showed "The Black Orchid" last night. Its recent controversy on this network prompts me to throw in my own 2 cents on the subject. Some people have said that they thought this was saw the worst Dr. Who episode they've ever seen because it was so different from normal Who episodes. Others have said it was a very good episode for the same reasons. I would put myself into the latter category. The Black Orchid was just full of all sorts of tongue-in-cheek situations. I especially liked the Charleston dance scenes. Tegan living a private fantasy and Nyssa showing off her "rather good" dance form (and form in general.) The Doctor, in his many incarnations, is always saying that he'd love to play a spot of cricket, but we finally get to see him actually doing it. It was nice to see Adric stuffing his mouth instead of vocalizing through it. To be truthful, though, this is my second time through the Adric era and I'm finding him much easier to get along with. I'm am actually enjoying his character. The plot behind the Black Orchid was easier follow than most. It allowed me time to sit back a really enjoy watching the characters in a more normal environment than seeing them dodge laser blasts or escape some impossible "how's-he-going-to-get-out-of-this-one" predicaments.
