Gang --- I send it before and I'll say it again: I really, honestly, do not understand all this preoccupation with Sarah Sutton! (Nyssia) I don't mean to offend anyone, but I've been over this again and again with people (in person)...all she is is a cute bod who screams alot and perpetuates the "females are bubbles" stereotype. And that's just what I think of the character. Sutton herself is an AWFUL actress. My lord, she only seems to have one emotion (worry/anxiety) and she is always using it at the wrong spot... (I got one mail message from someone once who tried to tell me that Sutton MUST be a good actress because she was teaching acting somewhere... good grief, that's like being blinded by a doctorate or admission to the medical association...) I really do not mean any disrespect to Sutton or the netters that like her. (I'm sure she's a nice person...) But ask yourselves this: would you all be rushing to her defense if she had the same character, same acting ability, same dialog, but was short, dumpy and had pimples? - Rob DeMillo MACC ...seismo!uwvax!uwmacc!demillo (...flames are not just an insult, they're a way of life...)

I think the key words here are 'cute bod' but at the same time I really disagree-- she wasn't a bubble. She was mis-scripted a fair amount, but she was the strongest female companion since Romana. I think she's much better, overall, than a Leela or a Teegan (or a romana II, for that matter). Don't shoot nyssa, shoot the scriptwriters (while you're at it, shoot them for the way they misused Adrick, too). >But ask yourselves this: >would you all be rushing to her defense if she had the same character, >same acting ability, same dialog, but was short, dumpy and had pimples? [Gallifrey your famous son / Should have stayed a great unknown ... ] (First a message that gort (i.e. sunybcs) has news up and running normally. By the way, Rob, aren't you confusing Nyssa with Kassia?) [it's clobberin' time.....FLAME ON!] > And that's just what I think of the character. Sutton herself > is an AWFUL actress. My lord, she only seems to have one emotion > (worry/anxiety) and she is always using it at the wrong spot... Have you forgotten what Nyssa has gone through? She started off, pure and innocent, in "Keeper of Traken". Then the Master took over her father's body. Her best friend, Adric, was killed. To sum up, she grew up in a hurry. How would you have acted if you were her? She was happy in "Black Orchid", though. > (I got one mail message from someone once who tried to tell me that > Sutton MUST be a good actress because she was teaching acting somewhere... She's not teaching acting yet; she's studying drama. I wonder what else she has done in regards to acting. > would you all be rushing to her defense if she had the same character, > same acting ability, same dialog, but was short, dumpy and had pimples? Probably not. Unless she was cute. [flame off.] Let me now say that most of the actors and actresses who were companions were unknowns. The same also goes for most of the production crew -- I've heard that "Doctor Who" was training ground for production teams. It's probably training ground for inexperienced actors and actresses. (The kids don't know. They don't mind, as long as it's fun to watch.) I don't really care that you don't like Sarah Sutton; it's your opinion. (So why am I posting? Because I like her.) Agreed, she may not be a fine actress (I think she was trained to be a dancer, and may have never "trod the boards"), but she's still CUTE. That's more than I can say about Suzanne Somers (talk about acting inability!). And someone said that the only part Colin Baker can play is an arrogant snob. Maybe so, if he's a character actor (and a rather non-versatile one at that). I know he's a great ad-libber, and did work in the theater in Sweden, but only time will tell if the Sixth Doctor will mellow out. (I'd like to see some 22nd season episodes -- can BBC1 be picked up with a satellite dish?) Sorry to put you on the spot like this, Rob, but what companions do you like? How about rating all the companions (from Susan to Perpugilliam Brown) on a 1-10 scale? Perhaps you should rate the Doctors as well. Or better yet, what if you were the next companion? Meanwhile, a lonely young man hopes for someone special under his Christmas tree..... There really wasn't any reason for Nyssa to go through her gradual disrobement (or was JN-T proving that he is human also:-). It was rather gratuitous. But she does get the award for best looking companion in a slip. BTW, it was rather enjoyable. Certainly more than Teagan hoofing around in Arc of Infinity in those shorts. And certainly better than the scrawny Romana II. But enough of the negative - just think of THE Romana in Armageddon Factor, with that white outfit and the white boots, that probably gets my vote for best looking companion in an episode. But to go to where I will pick bones with Chuq, I think that Leela was the best companion since Jo Grant in terms of independance and being able to think. Her character was such that the technology was not familiar, but she had a quick grasp of it once it was explained. And she is the first companion in the Baker and Davisson eras that was not just a shadow to the Doctor. She had integral conflicts of character between her and Baker. For example, Invisible Enemy where she keeps differing as to whther violence is necessary or not. Or Robots of Death, where for most of the show she is seperate from the doctor, but is still able to accomplish and not sit there and whimper or scream. I can't think of an example of any other companion to Baker or Davison that shows the independance from the Doctor that she shows. Of course if we want to flame, we can talk about her costuming - although it was resonable realistic, I think the top was just a little too baggy, I would like to see something a little more close-fitting... And how can you say that her character portrayed intelligence. Because she would spout a technical term every once in a while. Name a place where she actual came up with an original idea that wasn't a suggestion of the doctors. And the only script-writer that deserves to live from the Adric era was the one that wrote Earthshock. Walt Pesch AT&T Technologies ihnp4!ihuxp!wbpesch

Can we please start talking about something else? This is getting a bit yes she is - no she isn't (I came here for an argument!). I agree that Sarah Sutton is cute (and those of you who agree should write the BBC and ask for her fan picture - it shows Sarah in some slip sort of outfit in a pose one usually finds in popular men's magazines. No I don't have the BBC address here with me) but her character is a sort of strange mixture of Romana I and the usual screaming bimbos the doctor normally travels with. I don't particularly care for it but that's my problem. Still waiting for the day when they make John Cleese the doctor CMAZ504 at ut-ngp
