                     SUMMER INSTITUTE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

SOFTWARE RESOURCE MODELING AND COST ESTIMATION

                               July 16 - July 20

This five day intensive lecture series will feature some of the top
experts in the field of software cost estimation and resource use
modeling. The course will introduce participants to the fundamental
issues of resource modeling, illustrating the ideas with case studies
and demonstrations of cost estimation tools. Practical guides to size
estimation, including the new ideas of Albrecht's function points and
DeMarco's function metrics will be discussed by their developers.
Participants can learn how to create a model of their own with Basili's
Meta-Model methodology or use the existing systems of PRICE S, SLIM and
ESTIMAX, all discused by their developers. The Wicomo Tool, an
implementation of Boehm's COCOMO Model will also be demonstrated.

The emphasis in the lectures will be on the useablility of the ideas
presented in actual cost estimation and resource modeling. Laboratory
sessions will reinforce the ideas presented in lectures.

Extensive time will be available for discussions with the lecturers.
