[net.tv.drwho] pledge breaks

[Go 'head bug, Make my day]

I know, pledge week is a pain, especially if you'r taping, but it's just
something we have to live with.
At our station, if you become a member during the Dr Who time-slot, you
get something connected with the show.
Ex: For $20 you get the stations mag and the Dr Who Theme Song record from BBC
Then i think for $50 you get the mag and Tom Baker's scarf pattern and for
$100 you get the mag, the record and the scarf.
(please keep in mind pledge week was a while ago, so the prices-gifts might
not be correct.)

Any other station do this?

Here at WNED-TV (Channel 17) you get premiums which amount for 1/12 of the
pledge. If you pledge $60, you may enroll in DWFCA. For $90, you may
choose a Doctor Who T-shirt. For $120, you may select one day's admission
to Who-Fest. And for $180, you may receive the Peter Haining book, Doctor
Who: A Celebration. These are only a few of the premiums available; it's
been about a month since the last pledge break.

What I don't like is the begging that they do: "O how we need you! If you
don't pledge, we won't have the money when the bill comes in. And that means
no more Doctor Who." I'd rather be in the studio, taking pledges and be
too busy to hear their schtick, rather than watching at home. This summer,
when the station showed "Castrovalva" (in movie format) opposite the Republican
Convention (who watches these?), Jean Zeller--one of the station grovellers--
mentioned that the folks in Southern Ontario (well within the range of channel
17) think the Davisons shown in movie format were "the greatest thing since
sliced bread". The phones started ringing after that.

Two months ago, I saw a TV Ontario pledge break. It was short and to the
point: "If you think this program is worth paying for, call the number on
your screen." I like their pledge breaks better than ours. Too bad the
local cable company doesn't carry it.
