There seems to be somewhat of a trend toward more "exposure" of the 
companions.  I think, though, that this is also dependent on the 
specific character involved.  Given the character of Peri, I am less
surprised to see her in a revealing swimsuit than say, Liz, during
the 7th season.  However, recall that in early times there was 
"exposure" too; e.g. the Doctor himself is down to a bare T-shirt 
in the episode "Dr Who and the Silurians" (second show of the 7th 
season).  Again this is because the Pertwee doctor was more of the
fix it type who worked on Bessy (sp?), his car, and other mechanical
implements in coveralls or T-shirts just as often as his regular
outfit (the black cape, etc.).
