[net.tv.drwho] Sexy Scenes...

flyboy@ihuxk.UUCP (Steve Veach) (01/08/85)

The first Colin Baker episode was just aired on our Chicago PBS station.
Did anyone else notice several occasions where the new American Dr. Who
partner, Perrie, was provocatively posed? Also in a scene very near the end
of the episode, there were some tight shots of her cleavage as she bent over.

I am not criticizing or applauding this, but was wondering if anyone else has
heard about the apparent change in BBC philosophy regarding the series and
such camera shots with the new Dr. and partner.

P.S. Does anyone else think the new Dr. looks like a sleezy lounge singer?

I don't know about looking like a sleazy lounge singer, but Colin Baker
looks like he's going to be a much more sarcastic Doctor.
Example: As Peri is kneeling over him, he regenerated, and sat up.
Peri stammers, "I, I, I..."
The Doctor says something to the effect of, "You must have a very big ego
to say 'I' so often!"

Actually, the quote is "That's 3 'I's in one breath, makes you sound a
rather egotistical young lady!"

We here in the San Francsico Bay Area haven't seen Caves of Androzani
yet (we'll see it on the 26th), so we haven't seen the shot that started
this all. Yet I can't help wondering why people haven't written about
Romana II in The Creature from the Pit, or Nyssa in Terminus. Both of
those stories had cleavage and certain shots in Terminus were, uh,
unlike those normally seen in Doctor Who.

I didn't notice her poses, I was too busy watching her figure. *grin*
However, I do remember the scene with her and the Doctor in the wardrobe
room. Peri sits down while the Doctor selects his outfit. Then they
cut to another scene. When they return, the Doctor is in his new outfit,
and Peri is still sitting in the room. It kind of gives the impression
that she was in the room all that time. (It might also give the impression
that American girls are more liberal than British girls. Perhaps JNT is
using the element of sex appeal to keep the lads from outgrowing the show,
and (maybe) to attract voyeuristic dads to the show.) As Louise Jameson said,
"if you wear a leather leotard, and you're on after the football results,
they'll be sure to notice."

A few other "cheesecake" scenes come to mind:
-- There was a glimpse of Tegan's bra-strap (over the shoulder) in
"Warriors of the Deep".
-- Turlough wears shorts in "Planet Of Fire". (A gesture to the
teenaged female fans.)
-- Nyssa's role in "Terminus" and Peri's "bikini entrance" in "Planet
Of Fire". (Two obligatory scenes.)

If trends continue, there might be a "topless Doctor" by 25th season.
Nah. Well, maybe. Only time will tell.

With all this talk on sexy scenes, I wonder if Jo Grant had ever been
"exploited" by the camera. Her legs are almost impossible to miss,
especially with those miniskirts. :-)

In episode 2 of Spearhead from Space Jon Pertwee is seen topless
and presumeably (sp?) bottomless in the shower of the hospital.

Katy Manning posed for nude pictures with a Dalek for an
Australian mens magazine. (why a Dalek is what I want to know!)

Concerning Peri (the CORRECT spelling) watching the Doctor
disrobe and select a new costume, it appears that all (or at least
most) of the jnt episodes feature the Doctors wearing the white shirt
with red question marks on the collar. As seen in the Castrovalva
episodes the shirt reaches to the floor. Assuming that Colin Baker
is wearing the same shirt Peri would not have seen anything.

Having just seen the last episode of DOCTOR WHO AND THE SILURIANS
I was 'shocked' to see the Doctor in shirt sleeves and I could have
sworn that I saw a tatoo, but my friends advise me to get a new tv.
Has there been another episode where the Doctor is also wearing a
short sleeve shirt and was I seeing things in that episode.

Yes, that *was* a tattoo you saw in Dr Who and the Silurians, which
also appears in the first Pertwee episode (with the famous shower
scene!). Apparently, Jon Pertwee got the tattoo when he was in the
Royal Navy during WWII, as a "birthday present".

Your television is working fine; a tattoo is indeed visible in
"Doctor Who and the Silurians". I haven't seen short sleeves in
any other Pertwee episodes, but the tattoo can be seen in the shower
scene (talk about exposure!) in "Spearhead from Space". I recall
being told that the tattoo is genuine, but I don't have the source
available at the moment.
