I've heard 24 feet originally. And it got less long as the doctor got lost, etc. until #5 really did it in. I knitted one 12 feet which seems fine for once around the neck and ends near the ground (for a six footer like me). It is easy for a beginner (like me) to knit one - just TEDIOUS... I gave up after *only* 12 feet.
