Re: watching old Pertwee episodes in B&W
Somehow, I rather like watching Dr Who in monochrome. I always assumed that
it was nostaligia on my part but some of the effects do come off better
without colour.
The reason for colour enhancing some episodes is probably to ensure wider
distribution.
When colour TV became official in Australia a great many shows disappeared
for good from the screen (including, thankfully, My Favourite Martian) and
the masters were usually destroyed (since no one would want to watch old
B&W shows like The Outer Limits, would they?). In fact, some of the
rediscovered Dr Who episodes came from collectors who intercepted these
shows on their way to the trash bins.
I suspect this happened in many countries and that a lot of stations still
have reservations about showing old B&W programmes.
