I can't understand how people like Adric, Nyssa and Tegan unless they just started watching them. They are no comparison to Leela, Romana I, Sarah Jane or Romana II. Hell, I even liked Jo, even though she was the typical helpless female, because at least Katy Manning played the character appropriately. She and the Doctor had a well-played father- daughter type relationship. Characters like Romana(s) had a good equals relationship. Leela was just superb and Sarah at least had a personality even if she sometimes got in the way. The newer companions just seem to be there for the ride. They don't interact well with the Doctor, even in the few episodes that Davison really shined. You could never see any love at all between them. Previous companions were really that - companions. AN&T are more like stowaways - the Doctor's always wondering just why he has them along. Even Harry, my least favourite of the Pertwee/Baker series, was superior to them in this way. -- Brad Templeton, Looking Glass Software Ltd. - Waterloo, Ontario 519/884-7473

> Let's have a new debate: Was Katarina really a companion? > Come on, let's have your opinions on Katarina- they don't have to be > firsthand, do you think she, and maybe Yates and the Master could enter > into it too, do you think they were companions or not? *** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR DALEK SOUP *** Yes, by the John Nathan Turner definition, Katarina was a companion, so was Mike Yates, the Master, Benton, and scores of others. It's quite simple, if any character associated with the Doctor for more than one story, they are considered a companion. Yates was considered a companion, so was the Master, neither of which ever stepped foot into the TARDIS (The Master I was considering was Roger Delgado (sp.). Now, do you think Davros fits under the same exception? Even more bizzare, Can you imagine a new Doctor, as John Cleese!?! -- Kenneth "Worzel" Fung "For the Eternal Space--Mobile Suit Gundam" UUCP : {decvax/dual/rocksanne/watmath/rocksvax} !sunybcs!daemen!fung "...to be destroyed by an Earthling, a mere girl, an American even, would make him the laughing stock of the Universe!"

Clarification of a minor point: I recently saw one of the John Pertwee segments now being shown on the NJ Network ("The ...(?) of Axos"), and in that story the Master most certainly rides in the Tardis!!! It only happens to be a few kilometers from the nuclear research plant to on-board the Axos 'ship', but it, nevertheless, fits the bill for making the Master a brief 'companion' of the Doctor.
