Excuse the digression: I heard that the HitchHicker theme was a track by
the Eagles. Anybody know which one?

Try "The Journey of the Sorcerer" (or something similar).

The radio program seems to use the Eagles version, but the television
program uses some other version. I assume that the TV version was
done to avoid paying the Eagles vast sums of money and was made by
the BBC's Radiophonic workshop.

I think it was something called "Journey of the Sorcerer", from either the
"One of These Nights" or "On the Border" album. I'll double-check when I
get home. It was written by Barry Leadon, and is quite a nice lengthy piece.
