Does anybody happen to know if there is a record out that has the original Dr. Who theme music arrangement; not the one that started with the last few Baker episodes, but the one before that? I'd be interested in getting a recording of the end-Baker et seq music. Anyone know record sources? --Dick Wexelblat (...decvax!ittvax!wxlvax!rlw)

There is a BBC record (21 Years of the Radiophonic Workshop) which has the oroginal Dr Who theme and the full length TARDIS take off - something rarely heard on the series these days. It also has a lot of other interesting thems and sound effects. There is also BBC Space Themes with a more recent version, as well as a couple of other Dr Who records although the latter usually have butchered versions. I rather prefer the old version myself. I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned or merely asked (the news feed to my node went into the time vortex for a few days), but here goes anyway: The very first episode did not feature any opening theme music at all. I think it was used to close that episode (it was a LONG time ago and tapes I saw recently had the episodes edited together; the theme was definitely used at the end of ep 4). The visual effects for the opening were used when the Doctor activates the TARDIS along with the full length sound effect. I think the producers decided that it just took too long in a 25 minute show (about 2 minutes) to use every time. RE: TARDIS takeoff sound The full length sound of a TARDIS takeoff was used only twice; once at the end of An Unearthly Child and (I beleive) at the start of Carnival of Monsters. And the version of An Unearthly Child I saw did have the theme music at the beginning. Has anyone else seen the original pilot for Doctor Who? The differences were quite interesting!
