[net.misc] smoking

bees@druxy.UUCP (08/13/83)

I do chew once in a while. I do not smoke. I am one of those few
unfortunates that am allergic to cigarette smoke. When someone
smokes around me, it always affects my allergies with sneezing,
runny nose and itchy eyes. If the area is enclosed like in an
office, or a closed car, the smoke gives me a headache.

I don't care to limit anyones freedom or vices, and I usually don't
like government control. I just wish people (not just smokers)
would be more conscientious about how they effect others. When it
comes to chewing, I do not chew around others, unless I know they
do not mind. My chewing would never hurt them physically, but I
care whether it upsets them emotionally, ie, it grosses some people
out.

In a way, I don't favor laws against smoking, but because in practice,
*most* people don't care about me, I do favor laws requiring at least
some non-smoking environments. There have been situations where I could
not work normally, because of smoking. When asked to smoke elsewhere,
these people either didn't, or just blew the smoke the other way.

Look at it this way: If someone insists on smoking near me, they hurt
me by ruining my environment, which causes me physical problems. On
the other hand, if I insist (by law or otherwise) that they not smoke
near me, I do not ruin their environment or hurt them physically. I
only cause them inconvenience.

Which is fair?

The smoking debate is going on in both net.flame and net.politics.
I am very vocal in my support for 'smokers rights.'
I am also too tired to handle *another* newsgroup. If
you want to discuss smoking, move to net.politics. read the articles
in net.flame as well (if your site gets them, i know some do not.
I can mail you *my* articles to net.flame if you cant get net.flame and
are interested).

I would be VERY grateful for any information about smoking.
This includes anything; i.e. medical, economical, legal effects of
smoking, rights of smokers and non-smokers, statistics, etc. I am
especially interested in whether or not smokers have the right to
smoke where they want to and whether non-smokers have the right to
clean air.
If you do not have any information yourself, perhaps you
could suggest a source where I might find some. Personal opinions
are welcome. Please reply by mail.
		Thanks in advance.

Just wanted to make a comment about this. I was also one of
those pregnant women who tried to quit while being pregnant.
Went back to the smoking after being told the same thing as
this neighbor was. My daughter was effected by my stress (which
the doctor told me, not my own observation).
