[net.tv.drwho] More trivia: where did the name DALEK come from?

bob@ulose.UUCP ( Bob Bismuth ) (08/21/85)

Having noticed the question of where the name TARDIS comes from, I couldn't
resist asking if anyone on the net really knows how Terry Nation came up
with "DALEK" and under what circumstances.

I realize that this question may have been posed prior to my reading this
news group, but I'm curious to know if American fans know the answer.

If anyone is interested in "old" DALEK information, I have the original
DALEK pocket guide (published by the Beeb) and the first DALEK colour
annual. I'd be glad to answer questions by mail.

If no one knows the answer to the above query, I'll post the info in
about 4 weeks.

(As you might have guessed, I've watched the Doctor since the beginning,
in black & white on the TV next door, 1 episode every Saturday at 5:15
GMT.)

Terry Nation tells several stories. My favorite is that he just invented
the name but so many people asked how came up with the name he later invented
a story that one volume of his encyclopedea was "DAL-EK".

Really Trivial Question:
In one episode of "Inferno", the doctor (Jon Pertwee) and the brigadier
are in the bragadier's office listening to a (nasty little) radio.
They listen, quite briefly, to a news reader.
Who played the news reader?

The only information I have on that was during one of the Tom Baker episodes
when he was intercepted in the transmat and sent to Skaro. The name is the
name of the race spelled backwards (KELAD), who were at war with the other
race on the planet. They were named by Davros.

Other than that, I have no idea under what circumstances the name originated.

There are many stories about where it came from, perhaps the most
beleiveable is that he just typed what came in to his mind.
(I find it hard to believe that there is an encyclopedia with
DAL-LEK, the most common story.)

PS. "The Daleks" was the best Dalek story I have ever seen.
