[net.tv.drwho] An early broadcast of "Attack of the Cybermen"

percus@acf4.UUCP (Allon G. Percus) (11/06/85)

I just received the latest New Jersey Network schedule, and to my
surprise, found that "Attack of The Cybermen," the second Colin Baker
story will not be transmitted on the LAST Saturday of the month.
Instead, it will be shown a week before that -- on November 23.
On November 30 (the last Saturday), the story which was originally
supposed to be broadcast on the 23rd, "The Web Planet," will be
shown.

Anyone know why this is. I have a theory, but as it might spoil
the plot for some people, I'll skip a few lines before talking more.

The plot of "Attack" is related in some way, if I remember correctly,
to Halley's comet (something to do with its crashing into the Earth).
As Halley's comes around sometime between the 23rd and the 30th
(I can't remember when), it would be have better effects (publicity-wise)
to show the story BEFORE the comet comes, rather than after.

Any other theories?

I can't prove it, but I'm sure your theory is incorrect. If you've
seen the story, there are certain aspects to it that make the change
an obvious one. I won't give the whole show away, but will supply a
hint: there was a definite purpose to moving "Attack of the Cybermen"
up a week, and it has to do with timing. Mail me if you want me to
spill the beans completely-- I'll let someone else let the cat out
of the bag.

The theory offered is proably incorrect. There are two good reasons
to show this on the 23rd:

1. Location references (Think about it)

2. 23rd is a fundraiser day, Attack is 1:30 long, Web is 2:15 and would
go on later than allowed.

"All these corridors look the same to me!" Who said it, what story?

While I'm sure the more informed "Whoosiers" (:-) who
have seen the episode are correct, could an additional
reason be that they're showing the C. Baker episodes
on the FOURTH Saturday of each month, not the LAST?
(There are five Saturdays in November this year.)

What? I've thought about it, but I still don't understand what you
mean.

Yes, but NJN has had fundraising during sixers before. Wasn't it that
way with "Frontier in Space"? I know they had it with a fiver, during
"The Daemons."

Yes, that sounds more like it. However, it would seem that the choice
is not up to NJN -- they take it when they get it from Lionheart.
