[net.tv.drwho] The Latest Dirt on "The Norman Con-quest"

acsgjjp@sunybcs.UUCP (Jim Poltrone) (11/25/85)

Recently, I heard a rather interesting tid-bit of information regarding the
Monstercon in Chicago:
Any DWFCA merchandise may not be sold at the con. And Ron Katz has
been banned from attending (as a dealer or a fan).

Allegedly, this decision has "been backed up by both the BBC and by
Lionheart".

*** flame on (orange: not too hot) ***
Now, Ron is not one of my favorites, but at least he is a fan who cares
about the show. And the BBC does get some money from the merchandise
(what the percentage is I do not know). That's more than I can say for
Norman -- SoL probably gets a greater percentage than the BBC does.
*** increase intensity to blue-white (really hot) ***
And now I hear that Norman is boasting about how many cons he "shut down".
This man is creating himself a monopoly! His ultimate goal is to have
the Chicago con be the ONLY con. And he's doing this by outpricing and
eliminating his competition one by one. (These are IBM tactics, folks.)
Denying others the opportunity to sell is unfair to those who wish to
provide the market with alternatives, and unfair to those who prefer to
"shop around". Here, there are no alternatives. With no competition, it's
Spirit of Light or nothing.
*** flame off ***

If you wish to make your voice heard, and make "a blow to the Empire",
don't buy or attend anything that has connections to SoL. Boycott.
Maybe we can put an end to greedy merchants who put money above fandom.
Followups are most appreciated -- let's get some debate on this!

(I can't afford Chicago, and even if I could, I wouldn't go, with all these
little strings being pulled here and there.)

Is it the 50's, or 1999?"
(no, this one's NOT fom an episode!)

Now wait a minute. Aren't there laws about this sort of thing?
(maybe someone should check with net.legal).

What is the reason for not allowing Ron Katz to attend?
Is it a matter of politics or what?

What has Ron done that has been so bad? (Please don't reply to this
question, the answers are far too many to count :-) ).

If the BBC and Lionheart are backing up the decision, he must have gotten
himself into a whole truckload of trouble.

Now I am not objecting to the decision. I hate Ron Katz more than I hate
John Nathan-Turner. I am just curious as to the reasons.

And now, come to think about it, isn't there something illegal about
that, too?
