Peter Haining, in "Celebration," describes "The Gunfighters" as "bad and ugly." I must object to this; it seems that Haining has missed the fact that much of the satire was meant to be distasteful. "The Gunfighters" now ranks as one of my favorite Hartnell stories (which, I have to admit, is not very hard), and I can not accept the reaction to the story by the British public (which shared Haining's view, for the most part). . ------- |-----| A. Saturday night was the meeting of the Jersey Jagaroth, during which we watched "The Gunfighters". Not one person in the room liked the episode. A comment was made that "V" would have been better to watch. Complaints: The repeated chorus in the background got to be rather grating after about 1 minute. There was a dearth of acting. The director obviously had no idea how to direct. Historical accuracy was not observed. Western pioneers most likely did not use British expressions, nor did they sport accents which would not be out of place in Sydney, Australia. The story was not intended to be a satire. Without a doubt, "The Gunfighters" is the worst Doctor Who story I have ever seen. It makes "Power of Kroll" look good. -- James C. The British probably didn't like "The Gunfighters" because the Western genre is inherently American and we are more accustomed to it. Robert Perlberg Resource Dynamics Inc. New York {philabs|delftcc}!rdin!perl

[comments to the effect that most British viewers didn't like "Gunfighters"] I did like the show but I was struck by the fact that it was VERY different from most of the other stories. As to the British, do they see old American westerns? If not, it's understandable that they'd not appreciate a spoof of same. John Scherer AT&T Bell Labs

> One thing that bothered me about this story: > > it sounded like The Doctor, Steven, and Dodo were calling > Wyatt Earp, 'Mr. Wearp.' Don't you realize -- that was the joke of it. The Doctor kept mispronouncing Wyatt Earp's name, as he always mispronounced "Chesterton" as "Chesterfield" or something along those lines. Eventually, Earp simply gave up on correcting the Doctor. . ------- |-----| A. G.
