[net.tv.drwho] Old stories / Season 23

ckuppe@spock.UUCP (Charles A. Kupperman '87 ) (01/27/86)

There's been a couple more questions I want to answer:

* Why did WOTAN call Hartnell "Doctor Who"?

This was Gerry Davis' fault. He was the script editor at the
time, and he never could get the distinction between "Doctor Who", the
show, and "The Doctor", the character. Read some of Davis' books. The
early ones, at least, refer to the Doctor as "Doctor Who", an anomaly
usually also associated with the early books of Malcolm Hulke and Bill
Strutton.

* What about Tenth Planet? Is it coloured?

No. This was a hoax perpetrated by DWM. Every year, they had
an April Fool's day hoax, and in 1984, their big hoax concerned a
version of Tenth Planet 4 that had been put together from clips and
remade footage. Then, supposedly, the whole shebang was edited,
computer-colored, and sent off to Canada. In fact, this process is too
expensive for the Beeb.
(The 1983 hoax concerned a story put together from "Beyond the
Sun" footage, the Hartnell equivalent of "Shada", or rather a cancelled
"classic", and BW Davison footage.)

***Interesting facts about the early years, no. 1:
I got this from Dennis Spooner. Apparently, the Lime Grove
studios, where they filmed the early Hartnell stories, are now
considered insufficient to film the 9 o'clock news! "Which," he pointed
out, "is just (a newscaster) and a desk."

It just goes to show what they were working with in those days.

One more thing, rumors (nothing more) about Season 23:

It is more or less confirmed that the format of season 23 will be
fourteen episodes, as follows:

4-4-2-2-2. Two four-parters, and three two parters.

		First Four parter.
		by Robert Holmes.
Sets up umbrella theme for season 23: A threat to Gallifrey.
		(By the Daleks!)

		Mission to Magmer
		by Philip Martin
		Will indubitably feature Sil.

		Third two parter.
		by David Halliwell

		Fourth two parter
		by Pip & Jane Baker
(Maybe the return of the Rani)

		Gallifrey (2)
		by Robert Holmes
		(Spoiler follows:)

		SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

(Note: The above spoiler is a vicious rumor: Nothing more.)
