[net.tv.drwho] What happened with "The Mind Robber"?

percus@acf4.UUCP (Allon G. Percus) (02/09/86)

I was under the impression that "The Mind Robber" was a 5-part story:
yet, when New Jersey Network showed it this past Saturday, it only
ran abuot 90 minutes in length.

Could it be that they chopped off part (or part was lost, so they
pulled a "Planet of the Daleks" deal on it)?

To be sure, the story DID seem like it ended before the real ending
(with the TARDIS simply coming back together).

Can anyone answer any of these question?

There are 5 episodes, but each was only about twenty minutes long
instead of the more typical twenty-five.

The Mind Robber was a five part story, but the parts were only 20
minutes when broadcast in Britain. Originally it was planned to
be a four part story, with The Dominators as a six part, but
The Dominators was cut by one episode. This resulted in a quick
writing of the first episode. The budget allowed no set construction
or the like, so they used a white stage. It came out rather well,
and I'll bet that if you didn't know that, you'd never have thought
that part was added in at the last minute.

Frazer Hines' cousin had to play the part of Jamie in episode two
because Frazer had a bad case of the flu and he couldn't be written
out. (I suspect there were contingency plans to continue him into
episodes 3-5 if needed.)

All in all, still my favourite story of all time.
