[net.tv.drwho] Who-ston Convention

dkl@usl.UUCP (Dwayne K. Lanclos) (03/06/86)

I recently attended a Dr. Who Convention in Houston as part of Channel 8's
promotion for funds during its latest pledge drive. Special guest star
was Colin Baker. Before the convention, I was expecting that Colin Baker
would spend twenty minutes or so answering questions and a similar amount
of time autographing books. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that
he was willing to stay as long as we would like answering our questions
and giving autographs (despite the fact he had just come back from
autographing 200 copies of "The Two Doctors" for Channel 8's promotion).

To settle rumors, he announced that production would begin on the next
season of Dr. Who in four weeks. Rumors that Gallifrey would be destroyed
to end the program are unfounded. Nicola Bryant is leaving the show and
will be replaced by another female companion. I was very impressed with
his light-hearted manner and affection for the role of the Doctor. BTW,
Colin does *not* like jelly babies.

As part of the video presentation, we got to see the very first Dr. Who
episode, "An Unearthly Child" (at least the first part), and two of
Colin Baker's, "Revelation of the Daleks" and "The Two Doctors". Before
last Friday, I had only seen Tom Baker's and Peter Davison's Doctors
(not counting "The Five Doctors"). I enjoyed Colin Baker's portrayal
considerably. (Based on the ending of "The Caves of Androzani", I
was worried that he would be rather obnoxious.) Of the two Baker
stories, "The Two Doctors" was far superior, in my opinion. The
Doctor seemed to have little to do in "Revelation"; the story would
have gone along similar lines even had he not been there. Finally,
having seen William Hartnell's Doctor at last, I can see how Tom Baker
picked up on some of his facial expressions, especially the wild eyes.
