I am forwarding the following request from Australia. Please reply to him directly. We will soon forward him voluminous documnentation on our IRAF system. --------------------------- From seismo!munnari!murdu.oz!bvd Thu Jul 18 22:18:45 1985 Date: 18 Jul 85 13:50:54 +1000 (Thu) To Steve Grandi or Richard Wolff I am writing to find out what, if any, astronomical data gathering or data analysis packages exist under unix (especially public domain or cheap). I am a member of a physics department that would probably be called an astronomy department in the US, since our research is mainly in experimental infrared (using the AAT in Australia and IRT in Hawaii) and X and gamma ray astronomy. We are currently investigating the purchase of a departmental computer, and the question has arisen as to whether there is anything comparable to the VMS Starlink system which runs on unix systems. Our contacts about that system are all VMS oriented, and are not able to tell us anything about portability to unix or other unix software. Unfortunately, we don't get (nor can post to) net.astro or net.astro.expert anywhere in Australia, given the costs of transpacific phone calls. I suspect I could have answered many of the questions I have by reading these groups or posting questions to subscribers. If possible, could you pass on these enquiries to others among the unix astronomical community. Thanks in Advance. -- Steve Grandi, National Optical Astronomy Observatories, Tucson, AZ, 602-325-9228 {arizona,decvax,hao,ihnp4,seismo}!noao!grandi noao!grandi@lbl-csam.ARPA
