We are continually reminded by VMS people that the Unix f77 compiler provided with 4.2bsd is less efficient than theirs by about a factor of 2. We are looking for better performance. Does anyone have any experience with the Green Hills Software optimizing f77 compiler for 4.x bsd Unix? Is it real, or is it vaporware? ... and is it better? If I get a reasonable number of responses I will summarize to the net. -- Ed Nather Astronony Dept, U of Texas @ Austin {allegra,ihnp4}!{noao,ut-sally}!utastro!nather

I'd be surprised to see statistics that showed that VMS Fortran code was twice as fast as 4.2 BSD f77 code... On the other hand I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to hear that the VMS math library functions were 4 or more times as fast as Unix math library functions. Do we have any volunteers to rewrite the Unix math library? I keep asking and no one seems to want the job...
