Well, there may be hope after all. I was told that a company called Philon in New York had some sort of fast F77 compiler for a VAX under UNIX, so I gave them a call. Their product is designed for Ultrix, but I was told by the salesman (if you can trust one) that it would be possible to make it work under 4.2BSD (any comments on the feasibility of this ). Here's the info: I was told that their compiler, which would be ready in about three or four months, will be similar to all the other compilers the company makes: it produces some sort of P-code that is then crunched down by a standard cruncher to machine language, so that routines from any of their other languages (C, Cobol, Pascal, etc.) are fully compatible. Right now they have versions ready for 68000 machines, so if you're interested you might check that out. No benchmarks for the real thing, though they are looking for sites to beta-test it. It apparently will be offered by DEC, cost on the order of $6000 for a single copy of binary-only, and be really fast. Their number is (212) 807-0303. -- Michael Richmond Princeton University, Astrophysics {allegra,akgua,burl,cbosgd,decvax,ihnp4,noao,princeton,vax135}!astrovax!richmon
