Last weekend's Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union basketball regional tournaments produced a few surprises. The #2 ranked York Yeomen lived up to their reputation of not being able to win the big games, by once again not winnning a big game and not proceeding to the Final Four. York lost to the St Francis Xavier X-Men in the Ottawa regional. I love it. #5 Brandon prevailed over X in that regional final. The biggest news came from the Fredericton regional, where #3 St Mary's withdrew from contention since they realized (finally) that they'd been using an ineligible player all year. This move opened the door for #7 Lethbridge (who? I can hear you all asking) to beat Brock and gain their first final four birth in, oh, easily, a long time. #1 Victoria, as expected, crushed Winnipeg 100-62 in the Calgary regional. And the #4 Waterloo Warriors prevailed in front of a superb home crowd to defeat the surprising PEI Panthers in the Waterloo regional. PEI, as predicted here, upset the hated Western Mustangs, much to the delight of the Waterloo crowd. Thus this weekend's Final Four in Halifax sees Victoria facing Lethbridge in a rematch of the Canada West division final, and Waterloo vs Brandon in a rematch of last year's semi final won by the Warriors on your basic go-down-in-history shot with no time left. Look for the Warriors and Victoria in another rematch of last year's championship game. The Final Four tournament suffers from the lack of a local entrant, which should adversely affect the gate. Plenty of good seats are probably still available. Don't miss it if you can. Your Canadian Correspondent Steve Hayman University of ("We Want Vic!
