Just heard this morning that all 74 invitations-to-try-out for the 1984 US Olympic basketball team were sent out, and no Purdue players were invited...never mind how many other knowledgeable people picked them for All-Big Ten honors and so on... Once again Bobby Knight has demonstrated the capriciousness and low cunning which has become his trademark. I'm going to root for the Russians, the French, the Koreans, and anyone else who can put a basketball team up against the US. Bobby Knight may not be one of my all-time favorite people, but it's not really fair to lay the blame for the lack of Boilermakers (or any other players) on the Olympic trial team entirely at his feet. Yes, he is the head coach - but there was a committee to make the selections, so Knight wasn't the only one doing the picking. BTW, despite whatever complaints anyone (myself included) may have about Bobby, he IS a damn good basketball coach - and I expect the Olympic team to do well under his direction. -- Jim ..!houxm!hou2b!sims

Face it, Rsk the Wombat: 1. No one on Pudoo was good enough to make the Olympic team. 2. Bobby Knight isn't the only one choosing players; your players were snubbed by several people. 3. I wouldn't expect anything else from Pudoo people other than pulling for the Russians. Mark

I'm glad you and I are rooting on opposite sides. While you're at it, why don't you move to Russia. Once again, Bobby Knight has shown that West Lafayette is the furthest spot on earth from basketball. Mark Hamilton Denver, CO

{} Bobby Knight is the US head coach, true. But officially, he does not select the players invited to the try-outs. The nation is divided into four regions (I think the same regions as the NCAA tournament). In each region a coach is selected (by Bobby Knight ?) to invite the players of that region to the try-outs. Knight then selects 12 men from this group and they will play in the Olympics. Of course this does not mean that Knight has no say over who gets invited to the try-outs. What if the guy in the Mid East refused to invite Ewing (although that would be improbable as the Georgetown coach selects the players of that region)? H.
