The Russian who made the infamous hoop was Aleksandr Belov. I believe the clock was set up (the THIRD time) with only 1 second (not 3, as on the second try.) Possibly I may have that reversed. Bobby Knight had this to say about the play: "Three things happened which were not called. They took more than 5 seconds to inbound the ball. The player who threw the pass stepped on the line. The player who caught the pass travelled. What all this proves is that you have to be more than one point ahead." In the ensuing melee, I believe U.S. coach Henry Iba had his pocket picked and lost his billfold containing $40. All in all, not one of the better days in U.S. sports history. -- Dave Seaman ..!pur-ee!pucc-i:ags "Against people who give vent to their loquacity by extraneous bombastic circumlocution."
