The player who calmly sank the two free throws to put the USA ahead in the '72 Olympics was Doug Collins, the Illinois State star who later had an injury plagued career with the 76ers. Doug was brutally fouled on a breakaway layup with 3 seconds to play and was able to gather himself and make both shots to put the USA up by 1, after trailing the USSR by as many as 10 points. After the free throws the Russians brought the ball into play not once, not twice, but three times before the play stood. A length of the court pass from under the USA basket did the trick. Coach Iba's protest was deliberated on for several hours the next day but the ruling backed up the referees and the USSR put the first blemish on what was then a 63-0 won-loss record in Olympic basketball. The USA team protested by not showing up to get their silver medal. I wonder if anyone can name some members of that '72 USA team. After Collins, Tom Henderson (ex-Bullet and ex-Rocket), and Tom McMillen (Atlanta Hawks) my memory clouds over. Jeff Ragle houxa!ragle
