[net.sport.hoops] Question about Boston

david@fluke.UUCP (10/17/84)

Can anyone out there fill me in on what is happening between Cedric
Maxwell and the Celtics? It would be a mistake to allow me to leave.
Also who will start at quard now the Henderson has been traded to
	Seattle?

I did not mean to say 'It would be a mistake to allow me to leave.'
I meant to say that it would be a mistake for Boston to lose
	Maxwell.

Maxwell is still unsigned and has missed all of training camp. The
Celtics have made Max an offer which would make him one of the top 15
paid players in the league ($800-900k/year range), but his agent
(Grinker) has not yet accepted. The dispute is over the amount of the
salary which is deferred; some of the money is paid long-term.

I have a feeling he will be signed by opening night (Friday in Detriot).
I would be very surprised if he were traded; he is very important to
both the offense and defense. All along it has appeared that Max wants
to play but his agent wants him to hold out, so he has. It appears that
Red is serious about not giving in, so I think Max will probably accept
the offer.

Henderson was in a similar situation regarding deferred salary. His
agent (Lang) finally gave in, but Gerry was traded a few days later. He
only played a few minutes in one exhibition game (and looked bad). The
Henderson trade didn't surprise me at all; the Celtics had a big minutes
problem with Ainge, Henderson, Johnson, and Buckner, all of whom would
start for most teams. I was worried they would trade Ainge over the
summer, since Danny made it clear he wanted more play than he got last
year, even if it meant moving on. Personally, I'd much rather have
Ainge starting, though Bird was right sayiing Henderson "saved our ass
in the finals."

The Celtics get a first round pick in '86 from Seattle for Henderson.
Seattle has a good chance of missing the playoffs, so there is a chance
of getting a very high pick. Too bad it's not for '85; oh, but for a
shot at local Pat Ewing! A sound move, I think, as long as it doesn't
have a bad effect on the "chemistry" of the team. That's hard to
predict.

Ainge will start at point-guard with Johnson the off-guard. Assuming
Max gets signed, the only new face will be 3rd-round pick Rick Carlisle
(also a guard), who has been extremely impressive in camp/exhibition.
