[net.sport.hoops] CIAU Final Four

mathnews@watdcsu.UUCP (mathNEWS) (03/27/85)

OK, it's finally time to admit to the rest of the world that Waterloo
*lost* in the Canadian Final Four. (I mean, after all the hype that
Steve Hayman and Dave Brown generated before the Final Four, I think
that some people south of the border would like to know what
happened...)

Semifinals (national rankings in parentheses):
   (#2) Waterloo Warriors 84 (#12) St. Francis Xavier X-men 76
   (#4) Victoria Vikings 79 (#5) Manitoba Bisons 70 (OT)

Interesting note on the UVic-Manitoba semifinal. Manitoba had a
20-point lead early in the 2nd half. The Bisons then folded and had
to make a shot at the buzzer to force overtime with a 64-64 tie.

Consolation Final:
Manitoba won. Who cares about the score?

Championship Game:
   Victoria 93 Waterloo 79

Victoria wins their sixth straight CIAU basketball championship.
sigh...

                                                    regards,
                                                        dwarf

Aw, Jim, what did you have to go and give that away for?

Seriously, though, Waterloo not winning was a BIG disappointment. The road
to the championship was paved with gold for the Warriors this year - the
CIAU structured the regionals in Waterloo's favour (again), the
#1 and #3 teams didn't make it to the final four, some of the best teams
in the country were suspended from the playoffs, Waterloo's Peter Savich
was the country's MVP, coach Don McCrae was coach of the year, the Halifax
fans were as sick as anyone of the Vikings, and of course the Band was
unchallenged again.

But they screwed up. Victoria was not even a particularly good team this year -
19-17 overall. (Waterloo wound up 30-7.)

Sigh is indeed the word. At least the entire team returns next year, but
then a lot of schools are going to be improved next year. We shall see
if Don McCrae can ever win the Really Big Game.
