[net.sport.hoops] Don't Count the Celtics Out

plw@panda.UUCP (Pete Williamson) (05/08/85)

It seems that many folks are not Celtics fans !!

But please don't jump the gun and assume that Boston will play

poorly against the Sixers or the Lakers, based on their struggles

with Detroit or Cleveland. First of all, Boston may not get by

Detroit ... it's now a 3 game mini-series ... anybody can win.

If they do advance, we can look forward to basketball's "Premier

Event" ... Boston / Philly. We haven't had one of these for quite

a while ... should go the full seven games ... although Philly looks

especially awesome right now. The winner of this series should

certainly win the NBA Championship, though they could suffer an

emotional letdown playing "Dancing Barry's Team". (Of course,

Kareem is Kareem ... LA could make a series of it yet !!). But don't

count the Green out of it. They never play any harder than they

have to. If they get by Detroit, expect them to play at the top of

their game. If they play at the top of their game, watch out !!

Sports analysts are split on the issue of why no one outside of Boston
is a Celtics fan. Some say it is because living in the Boston area
is a natural selector for stupidity and hence the rest of the country
is too intelligent, while others claim that instead of being related
to intelligence, this effect actually has to do with the high incidence
of inbreeding caused mental illness in the Boston area. We may never
know the full truth. To be frank, none of us really care.

More like football's premiere event. I've heard that East Coast basketball
will be aired in between wrestling events next year. Danny "Crybaby" Ainge
should be a natural.

Well, this is big of you. Last year LA "made a series" out of it with
Boston - taking them to seven games and losing the title on their own
mistakes, remember? This year they're incredibly healthy, James Worthy
has improved, and Byron Scott has become one of the league's premiere
point guards. The Laker's have lost one game so far in the playoffs, setting
scoring and assist records along the way. Oh yeah, I think they'll "make
a series of it".

As always, the Celtics are weenies...

Or maybe it's because they are all jealous of our 15 CHAMPIONSHIP banners
hanging from the rafters!

Going on "Sweet Sixteen"...

Scott, I couldn't agree with you more. Most all of the Celtic fans seem to
think they are the only team in the league, when they are clearly struggling.
I don't think they will get past Philly, but I hope they do, because the
Lakers will be WAITING for revenge come the finals.

By the way, Byron Scott is one of the premier *shooting* guards in the league,
not a point guard. Magic usually handles those duties, and quite well I
might add.

Of the Lakers 9 playoff games thus far, 7 of them have been blowouts (leads
of at least 20 points some point in the game). They cannot and will not be
stopped this year!!

Yeah, I'm a bit red-faced about that. I guess maybe I should read over
my deathless prose before hitting the "send" key. Anyway...

I am hoping that "Dancing Barry's Team" continues to blow out their

Western Conference "opposition". Let them rack up as many scoring and assist

records as possible. Let them sweep Denver in four straight and wait for

the Celtics / Sixers series to end in seven. In short, let them prepare for

the Eastern Champion by being "rested and untested".

The Rings will belong to the Celtics or the Sixers.

(How's LA done against Boston in past Championships anyway ?)

I have been a devoted Celtic fan ever since I started following
pro basketball, that is, until the past few years. Now I despise
the Celts more and more each game I see them play. The reason
I'm not a Celtic fan is because they are by far the dirtiest
team in the league. Ainge, Carr, McHale, Maxwell, and Bird (yes,
sad but true) would all make my "All Cheap Shot" team; Ainge, Carr,
and McHale would be starters. In stark contrast, D. J. plays
physical, but not dirty. When I was a Celtic fan, it was easy
to brush off the 'flying elbows' and 'shoves in the back' as just
physical play, but I see now that it is not. The constant cheap
shots are what drove me to be an Indiana Pacer fan; yes it is that
bad. I sincerely believe you Boston fans should try once to take
off your blinders.

Perhaps the Celtics will defeat the short 76ers (the shortest team
in the league), probably in 7, but "Sweet Sixteen", no way. The
Lakers will be waiting (sorry Denver, not without Fats Lever) and
this time, they will be ready for the McHale body-slams, etc. Look
for the Lakers in 6.

Ok... I'm a Celtic fan. I admit it... I'm also a Laker fan, a Buck fan, and
a Sixer fan.

What bugs me is the exaggeration with which netters (no pun intended) ignor
the pushing and shoving of their favorite team while castigating the Celtics.

The Celtics play a very physical game but I don't think they play dirty. In
a physical game, a lot of pushing goes on. There's nothing unusual about it.
Players are trying to gain an advantage over their opponent when the ref isn't
looking. You don't think Moses does that?? You don't think Rambis or McAdoo
do that???? Face it... in varying degrees, the league is like that. If you
don't like that kind of play, I have no argument with you. If that's your
opinion, fine. But please realize that this is a matter of tastes. I have to
wonder if your real problem with the physical kind of play is that the Celtics
play it better??? You can't blame the Celtics for using this
advantage against teams. Do celtic fans complain that the Lakers shouldn't
be able to run since the Lakers do it better??

What we all dislike is when the physical play begins to border on violent
(as when Moses elbowed McHale in the face during game 2). I agree that
the Celtics get involved in (but don't necessarily instigate) alot of those
kinds of situations. I don't like that stuff either. But elbows in the
face and tackles are different from pushing off, scrambling for rebounds
and loose balls. The latter is done merely to get an advantage over the
opponent and all teams seek to exploit their advantages over opponents.
