[net.sport.hoops] celts-philly, game 3

dwc@hou2b.UUCP (D.CHEN) (05/20/85)

i watched the 3rd game yesterday and guess what? i have to say that it
was the best celtics game that i have seen in 2 years (or more). they
did everything right and with very little of the dirty play that they
have become known for.

but since i can't watch a celtics game without complaining about something,
does anyone notice the obvious bias towards the celtics of the two cbs
announcers? i mean i can understand old tommy but what about that other
guy? and did you get the way they were already retiring the doctor?
in the credits at the end of the game, i was looking for some statement
that the announcers were employees of cbs but were approved by the celtics.

while i haven't counted philly out yet, i'm getting mentally prepared to
root for the lakers (the lesser of the two evils). oh yeah, since i really
suspect another nba conspiracy, i expect the celtics-philly series to go at
least 6 since the nba has not gotten too much in the way of tv revenues due
to the many sweeps that have occured during the playoffs.

That other guy is of course Dick Stockton ... who was a local announcer here
in Boston ... did the Red Sox during the Lynn years ... did the Celtics
one year ... in fact he used to broadcast basketball in the same style that
he broadcast baseball. But CBS announcer bias is meaningless. Frankly, I'm
surprised anyone watches the games with the volume turned on. Many Celtics
fans in the Boston area tune in to "the voice of the Boston Celtics",
Johnny Most (WRKO radio network). If you really want to hear BIAS, tune
in some time. (Incidently, Johnny's priorities are: entertainment first;
accuracy second.) Watching TV and listening to radio is interesting ...
definately two different games going on!! ... Johnny claims that Jake
O'Donnell is from Pennsylvania and when he refs games in Philly, his
calls are biased in favor of the home team. Generally speaking, referees
do the best they can ... I'd like to see three or four work on a regular
basis ... it would clean up the game a bit. The Celtics are the cleverest
ballclub at working the officials. They change their style of basketball
depending on who is refereeing and how tightly they call fouls. I still
expect a seven game series for the Eastern Conference Finals, though I
hope the Celts end it tomorrow in game Five.--
