[net.sport.hoops] The Green Dirt: Vol I, #3

FLASH!!!! The Celtics have acquired Jerry Sichting from Indiana in exchange for
two second round picks. These picks wre not disclosed at the Pacers' request,
but it is certain that one won't be the Celtics' 1986 choice. That went to New
York in exchange for Ray Williams.

The Celtics Roster now looks like this:
Bird, McHale, Parish, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge, Bill Walton, Jerry
Sichting, Scott Wedman, Sam Vincent. In addition to these players,
there are 10 other people in camp. I rank them in the probable
order of making the team, in this reporter's assessment:

1. Sly Williams SF: Head case, but great talent. Can shoot.
2. Greg Kite C : Will have to work to stay, but Walton may not
			    be reliably healthy.
3. Rick Carlisle	PG: 26 ppg. during summer leagues. Loved by brass.
			    slow, but a Celtic role player to the max.
4. David Thirdkill	SF: Might have made it until they signed Sly. Plays
			    D, can shoot some.
5. Andre Battle SG: Can really fire, strange shot form.
6. Ronnie Williams	PF: Great hands " for a big man".
7. Carlos Clark SG: Hasn't shown fire and hunger.
8. Tracy Mitchell	PG: Quick.
9. Rick Lamb PF: Just wants to play.
10.David DuPree ??: 39 year-old reporter for USA Today. Will play
			    against 76ers in preseason opener.

			C  = Center
			PF = Power Forward
			SF = Small Forward
			SG = Shooting Guard
			PG = Point Guard

Jan Volk is looking for a competitive camp. Certainly this group will be
able to stimulate some interest.

Word is that George Gervin is unhappy with San Antonio Coach Cotton
Fitzsimmons. Could there be a move in the making for the popular Spurs'
Captain? Could he end up in the East? Could Cotton possibly be interested
in an Ainge/Sichting swap? Could this reporter be dreaming excessively?

Bill Walton has been delighted with Celtics camp so far. He is really
impressed by the way the Green stress the Fast Break. Walton observed that
other teams concentrate on conditioning first, then spend much of their
time on the set plays, getting to the fast break last. The Boston
temperament suits him just fine.

Rick Carlisle is a darling in management's eyes. Last year he carried the
VCR on road trips, counted heads on the busses, and even developed a limp
toward the end of the season, allowing him to be placed on "injured
reserve", which made room for the enigmatic Ray Williams. His good summer,
his team attitude, his presence at the Marshfield rookie camp are all
strong points in his favor for making this year's squad.
