Cornbread, Elgin and Me*. Who played Cornbread in the movie?

I have no idea to question 1, but for question 2, Dr J was the b-ball
star. There were probably other NBA players in that movie, but one that
sticks out is Lonnie Shelton (great ex-sonic). This movie was made when
Lonnie was playing for the Knicks.

I am afraid you are mistaken. It was Bernard King and not Dr. J. I've seen
the movie several time since its one of teh funnier athletic movies.

The movie that Julius was in was called "The Fish That Saved
Pittsburgh". Not exactly a classic. I rank it right up there
with his Dr. Chapstick commercials. His acting roles may not have
been much, but the man can play basketball!

LONG LIVE DR. J!!!!!!

And here's the answers, folks, from Leonard Maltin's TV Movies:

CORNBREAD, EARL, AND ME (1975) C-95m. **1/2 D: Joe Manduke. Moses Gunn,
Bernie Casey, Rosalind Cash, Madge Sinclair, Keith Wilkes, Tierre Turner.
Well-intentioned but overly meodramatic account of a black youth, on his
way out of the ghetto on a basketball scholarship, who is innocently gunned
down by police bullets. Fine performances and warm sense of black life
evaporate in TV series cliches.

---
Is this Johnny Cash's wife?
---

FAST BREAK (1979) C-107m. *** D: Jack Smight. Gabriel Kaplan, Harold
Sylvester, Mike Warren, Bernard King, Reb Brown, Mavis Washington, Bert
Remsen, Richard Brestoff, Rhonda Bates, K. Callan. Basketball coach
Kaplan accepts post at midwestern college, but brings his NY street players
along with him. Perfect, innocuous TV fare, with some good laughs
and exciting game climax.

---
Mike Warren is Bobby Hill on Hill Street Blues. Mavis Washington sounds
familar too.

Don't know his name, but the big guy on The White Shadow, also
seen sometimes as an orderly on St. Elsewhere. In fact, did
anyone see an episode last year guest starring the Van Patten
kid from White Shadow? The orderly walks by him, does a double
take and says, "Hey Salami!" (Van Patten's name on WS). Van
Patten looks back and says, "Huh? You got me mixed up with
someone else." VERY clever!! Anyway, the guy you're asking
about is NOT a pro basketball player.

I wasn't going to respond to this note, but then came this travesty of
inaccuracy. Dr. J did NOT star in "Fast Break", he starred in "The Fish
that Stole Pittsburgh". The members of Doc's team were: Set Shot, a
middle-aged barnstorming outside shooter; Jamaal Truth, a veiled
Afro-American Muslim fast break specialist; the Rev. Jackson, played by the
now Rev. Meadowlark Lemon, and a point forward; Benny and Denny, a pair of
ball-hawking twins; a fast talking DJ; a big slow forward; and a few other
unnotables.

The answer to question 2 is Bernard King. His team included: a female
shooter dressed in drag; and Michael Warren, a contemporary of the Lew
Alcindor age at UCLA, and currently Bobby Hill on Hill Street Blues.

I'll refrain from answering Question 1, because the incorrect title was
given. Search your books for "Cornbread, Earl, and Me". The real Cornbread,
by the way, is now a teammate of the movie Cornbread.

Speaking of Maxwell, he was a member of the Boston team in Dr. J's movie,
along with Curtis Rowe, Sidney Wicks, and Kevin Stacom. The Detroit team
featured Bob Lanier and Chris Ford, plus Eric Money. The New York team
starred Butch Beard and Spencer Haywood. The LA Team featured Kareem, Norm
Nixon, Connie Hawkins. There were others on these teams, but these are the
names that come to mind. Dr. J's Pittsburgh Team was renamed the Pisces,
since all the members of the team were born under that zodiac sign. It was
supposed to ensure the ultimate harmony.

The movie was choreographed by Debra Allen, who can be seen as one of the
two faithful fans in the stands.

Speaking of incorrect titles, the movie in which the good Doctor appeared in
was "The Fish that SAVED Pittsburgh". I assume that this was a mistake and not
a "travesty of inaccuracy", since you did go int detail about the rest of thee
characters. By the way, one of the other players was an indian, and the "point
forward" that you refered to was called "Bullet".
