[net.sport.hoops] Pre-season top twenty rankings

mannie@msdc.UUCP (Mannie Lowe) (11/22/85)

As promised here is the latest top twenty list from all the publications.
UPI's poll was released last night and USA Today's this morning.

What follows is the compilation of all of the major pre-season college
basketball rankings. The following polls are included:

(1) SpNw = The Sporting News
(1) S&Sm = Street & Smith's
(1) DVit = Dick Vitale's Basketball yearbook (not really major)
(1) GmPl = Game Plan Basketball
(2) InSp = Inside Sports
(2) Sprt = Sport Magazine
(3) SpIl = Sports Illustrated
(4) AP = Associated Press pre-season poll
(4) USA = USA Today/CNN poll
(4) UPI = United Press International poll

Points are calculated in the usual way. 20 points for first place, 19 for
second, 18 for third, and so on. Some magazines included more than
twenty teams in their rankings. Only the top twenty of those magazines
are included here.

A note: Some of the early magazines ranked some teams based on the fact
that certain players were going to play for them (Cedric Henderson at
Georgia and Tito Horford at LSU to name a couple). Those rankings should
be taken with that in mind.

The numbers to the left of the abbreviations above represent the scaling
factors I put on the various polls. The early magazines were scaled less
than the wire service's polls (as it should be). The list is sorted by
total points NOT scaled. The scaling total and ranking is there just for your
amusement and perusal right after the total in parenthesis.

Enjoy,
