[net.sport.hoops] Home Court Advantage in Real Basketball

nyssa@abnji.UUCP (nyssa of traken) (12/19/85)

During my years as a student I was able to visit several basketball
team's home courts and will now reflect my opinion of their home
court values:

ACC:

Clemson +6 points
Very loyal fans, but opponent fans can get tickets. Loud,
	and very orange.
Duke +8 points
The toughest place to play in the country. The students
surround the court, are very loud, and not caged.
Georgia Tech +3 points
It has been a while since I've seen Tech play at home, so this
may have changed. (They were 4-23 the season I saw them at
home.) No students could be seen. For that matter, no fans
	could be seen.
Maryland +4 points
A big hollow place, the players are separated from any
distraction. The availablity of visitor tickets can make
the place sound like a neutral court on occaisions.
North Carolina +4 points
The big surprise. UNC always has good teams that don't appear
to perform THAT much better at home than on the road. The
fans are loud, sometimes. If UNC is behind, the place is
	silent.
NC State +4 points
Similar to Maryland in environment. Not a good place to watch
a game, there are some TERRIBLE seats in the place.
Virginia +7 points
Wahoos are loud at all times (but a friendly crowd, really)
original, and seem to be able to affect the course of a game.
Wake Forest +5 in Winston Salem
	    +2 in Greensboro
Greensboro IS a neutral court on which they practice a bit more
often. I don't know why, but Wake always was tough in Winston
	Salem

Others:

Rupp Arena (Kentucky): +4 points
I heard so much about this place, and to see it is quite a
disappointment. Big, but there is noone within
about 30 feet of the court. Plus Kentucky fans are
	quiet when they fall behind.
Purdue: +6 points
Loyal, fairly loud, poorly lit. Quite a tight fit, even though
there is no one near the court.
Pallestra (Penn, LaSalle, Villanova, Temple, St. Joes): +5 points
Loud, but there is a split crowd.
MSG (St. John's): +7 points
St. John's seems to win here even when they are badly outplayed.
Why that is I don't know. Their supporters weren't very loud
(but they were quite rude) or original.

Any comments?

"Getting a bit rough, is it?"
"Remain silent, or you will die" Who said them, what story?

Cal State Fresno has the best crowds I have ever seen at any type
of sporting event! Their "Red Wave" can't be beat!

This alone is enough to give Fresno St. a home court advantage that
is hard to overcome for any team.
