Well, right on the heels of a not so great week, George was ready to begin showing his stuff since conference play began this week. Unfortunately, it looks like George must still be a little rusty on his ratings. As conference play continues look for things to improve. George did at least hit a few big games either exactly right or very very close (e.g. Pitt by 4 over Georgetown and Memphis State by 3 over Kansas). Out of 88 games last week George picked 48 correctly, missed 23, and lost 29 to his spread. For the season his record is 199 - 86 - 93 == 378 which translates to a not so wonderful 53% right for the season. His spread record for the week look liked this Dates 0-4 5-9 10-14 15-19 20-24 25-up Total 12/30-01/05 31 20 19 16 2 0 88 Season 114 118 67 43 22 14 378 Percentages 30 31 18 11 6 4 This week George has 4 newcomers to his top 20 or so, and without further ado, here they are: George's top twenty (or so) - Week six 1. North Carolina Tar Heels (1) 13. Michigan State Spartans (11) 2. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2) 14. Indiana Hoosiers (8) 3. Michigan Wolverines (3) 15. North Carolina State Wolfpack (*) 4. Duke Blue Devils (4) 16. Iowa Hawkeyes (*) 5. Kansas Jayhawks (5) 17. Illinois Fighting Illini (10) 6. Memphis State Tigers (6) 18. Georgia Bulldogs (12) 7. Syracuse Orangemen (7) 19. Virginia Cavaliers (18) 8. Kentucky Wildcats (13) 20. Old Dominion Monarchs (*) 9. Virginia Tech Hokies (9) 21. Louisiana State Tigers (21) 10. Georgetown Hoyas (20) 22. St. John's Redmen (22) 11. Louisville Cardinals (23) 23. Nevada-Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels (*) Things look pretty stable (so far) in the top 10 or so, with the remainder of the top twenty or so jumbling around a bit. The farther into the season, ratings begin changing less rapidly. You might be wondering why Memphis State (ranked 6th behind Kansas at 5th) didn't move up a notch since they just beat Kansas. Since their ratings are roughly equal and the game was played at Memphis State, George had Memphis State picked to win by a small margin. Well, they did just that so the ratings of both teams were unaffected by that particular game. This week's most interesting games finds #22 St. John's at Boston College Tuesday (George picks an upset with BC by 1), #17 Illinois visits #3 Michigan on Wednesday (Mich by 14), #11 Louisville visits #6 Memphis State on Thursday (Memphis State by 9), and finally Saturday #10 Georgetown visits #22 St. Johns (George has St Johns by 2!) and #15 North Carolina State visits #4 Duke (Duke by 13). George hopes your teams win this week. George P. Burdell George's Basketball Picks Atlanta, Georgia {gatech,ihnp4,mcnc,ncsu,akgua}!msdc!gpb

George, I was very impressed by some of your picks. The Pitt and Memphis St. picks were especially astute. I would like to know why Indiana was included in the Top 20 Or So, while Purdue was left out. Indiana lost twice at home, a tough game against a great Michigan team and a squeaker to an unimpressive MIchigan St. team that shot very well but is way too small. (Larry Polec at *power* forward?). Purdue, on the other hand, beat a very good Iowa team after being down by 6 with :54 to go and beat Minnesota by 8. Earlier we defeated DePaul at the Horizon by 15, and gave North Carolina a very good first half before being overpowered by their tremendous size. Purdue is 13-2, Indiana 8-3. I liked a lot of your other picks, with the exception of Michigan St. By the way, what do you think about the Purdue @ Michigan St. and Purdue @ Michigan games?? Thanks, Mike Lewis
