I think that Michigan will win the Big Ten and the NCAA this year. Roy
Tarpley is probably the best center to come out of the nation this year.
He definitely should win the Big Ten MVP as well as the NCAA MVP. Their
guards (Antioine "The Judge" Joubert and Gary "General" Grant) are
considered the best guard tandem in the country. Michigan would be
undefeated if they had a coach who knows how to coach superstars. I will
give Bill Frieder credit for recruiting top players but he has to learn
how to coach these players. I think that Michigan has now started a
dynasty even though they are losing three starting players because
Michigan has already recruited two of the top three high school players
for next year according to Street and Smith.
Did you know that Michigan has six Mr. Basketballs on their team and
they still lost two games (they should be No. 1 and undefeated). I bet
that Michigan will finish in the top three in the country and win the
NCAA championship. Michigan would have won the championship last year
if there was a shot clock (Villanova would have never got by Michigan if
there was a shot clock.)

well you were close on the first game: actual score was UM 80 Purdue 79
it sounds to me like you are a michigan alumnus (impartiality?)
anyway michigan has a good team but probably not good enough to win the
ncaa's (north carolina will beat UM in the final).

But deadly wrong on the second one:

FINAL:
	Illinois 83, Michigan 79 (OT)

Michigan may be a good team, but they sometimes play poorly. They lost TWO
previous games by a total of 22 points, whereas Illinois lost SEVEN previous
games by a total of 21 points. In tournament play, a consistent (and good)
team maybe outplayed by an average team with exceptional performance (we
have all seen that at last year's ncaa final), but an inconsistent team
certainly has more chance of being eliminated at any time. Illinois is
struggling for the ncaa berth now, but if they get in, I'll bet that they
will go farther than Michigan does. They have some real talented players,
but unfortunately the incompetence of their head coach keeps them from
winning those close games.

Well Chris, don't you feel silly? The best team doesn't always win,
especially on the road in the BIG 10. Any BIG 10 victory is nice but
it is really gratifying when the FIGHTING ILLINI can send michigan
slinking back to ann arbor on the wolverine they rode in on ( being
on national TV didn't hurt my feelings either). Good luck in the NCAA
but remember wolverines are NOT welcome in Champaign-Urbana !!

Even though Illinois barely beat Michigan, I think Michigan will win the rest
of their Big Ten games since 5 of the last 7 games are at home. Michigan has
not lost at home this year and the two remaining games are against Northwestern
(who don't deserve to be in the Big Ten but the only reason they are in the
(who don't belong in the Big Ten but the only reason why the are in the
Big Ten is because the rest of the teams need an easy opponent to play on their
schedule) and Wisconsin. Therefore, Michigan will win the Big Ten and get a
high seed in one of the regionals and definitely will go much farther in the
NCAA and will probably win it all. Michigan is in a slight slump right now
but they will get out of their slump before the NCAA tournament starts.
So watch out for those Wolverines as they will be awesome in the tournament.
Michigan starting five (Antoine Joubert, Gary Grant, Richard Rellford, Butch
Wade, and Roy Tarpley) can not be matched by any other starting five college
team.
See you in Dallas while you Illinois fans will be watching the game on TV.
                                 	..ihlpf!ccalille

P.S Illinois probably won't make it into the NCAA and will have to settle for
an NIT bid since I bet they will lose at least four more games. With this
many losses the NCAA will not take Illinois into the tournament.

You apparently have not been following Michigan basketball at all. There
is no doubt that Michigan has THE BEST guard tandem in the country,
consisting of 6'3" sophomore Gary Grant and 6'5" junior Antoine Joubert.
See, UM plays "Street" ball, unlike the teams in the ACC or other divisions,
who play "wimpy" basketball. In the Big Ten you have to be aggressive in
order to survive, and UM certainly is. These two guards are every coaches
dream. I have been following UM basketball for about ten years and I have
never seen a tandem like those two. When the game is tight these two love
to get their hands on the ball because they know that they are good enough to
handle it and they always have. They are THE BEST!!!
Michigan has the best team in the country:
6'11" Roy Tarpley (Street and Smith's Player of the Year)
		6'8" Butch Wade
		6'6" Richard Rellford
		6'5" Antoine Joubert
		6'3" Gary Grant
	  Subs: 6'9" Robert Henderson
		6'1" Garde Thompson
		6'7" Glen Rice
		6'8" Mark Hughes
		6'3" Billy Butts
		6'9" Loy Vaught
		6'11" J. P. Oosterbaan
		6'6" Mike Griffin
		6'2" Ron Gibas
6'9" Steve Stoyko (Offensive Hustler of the Year?)

UM's subs would be starters on any other Division I team in the country!
They are so good that it will be no surprise that on a warm spring
night in April UM emerges as NCAA Champions!!!

In their two games against Illinois, Bruce Douglas alone stole the
ball from these two guys 13 times. Other guards of Illinois also had 5 or
6 steals. So ...

Gee, Bill Frieder must have played his cheer leaders, otherwise
how come a team of this kind of caliber would lose to Minnesota and
Michigan State by >10 points?

What reasoning (beyond general emotionality) do you have for believing this?
I've watched Michigan play on several occasions and while Grant and Joubert
are good, they have an annoying habit of disappearing for long stretches.
There are several guard tandems that are as good or better (but perhaps not
with the fancy nicknames:)

Duke: Amaker and Dawkins
Ga. Tech: Price and Dalrymple
UNC: K. Smith and Hale

...but let's get real. It takes more of a backcourt that two to win a
conference title much less a national championship. You can't have both
those guys on the court for 40 minutes. Things get pretty wretched at
old UM when you get beyond the first two.

>See, UM plays "Street" ball, unlike the teams in the ACC or other divisions,

Huh? Who has not been following what basketball? The ACC has not been playing
"wimpy" basketball for a while. It certainly isn't obvious to me in watching
that the Big 10 is any more physical than the ACC these days.

Well it seems that Michigan once again proved to a national audience
that it is an awesome team by whipping Iowa last Saturday (82-66).
Even George Raveling was in awe over the Wolverines!
Some quotes from him after the game:
"Michigan has three subs (Henderson, Thompson, and Rice) that could
start for 95% of the Division I schools (what I said last week)"
"Playing against Michigan is like the U.S. versus Libya - boy would I
hate to be Kadaffi"
"I wish we could trade players - I'd give three Big Macs and a Coke
for Henderson right now"

See, even other coaches love Michigan! Bring on North Carolina!

SO WHAT!! Iowa is 6-6 in Big 10 play and their loss to the Wolves
was their 3rd straight defeat. They lost to Minnesota's 5 man team
last Sunday, and to Mich. State on Thursday.
Michigan is good, but they are too inconsistent (remember the
game in Minneapolis?!!! 75-65 Gopher victory - before the team
was dismantled)

Hey, wait a minute, Michigan is pretttty CONSISTENT as far as
Michigan State is concerned ---

	Final from Ann Arbor, Michigan:

		Michigan State	74
		Michigan	59

This is only the second solid defeat (loss by more than 10 points)
for UM basketball offered by MSU this season.

Yea, you wolves fans will say that Michigan will bounce back and take
the NCAA crown in Dollas, right?

Dream on!!! There is always next year!!!

Was it my imagination, or did Michigan lose to Michigan State last
night? Bring on North Carolina? Len Bias, certainly one of the
top three or four players in the NCAA, along with the rest of the
Maryland Terrapins, beat North Carolina last evening 77-72 in
overtime -- in the Dean Smith arena! I think perhaps that Duke
will be rated number one in the next rankings. I still think North
Carolina is the better team, but Duke has played better and
deserves the honor. Let's hear more about the really good teams
and less about Michigan, okay?
