[net.sport.hoops] George is somewhat confused

gpb@msdc.UUCP (George P. Burdell) (02/25/86)

Oy! (That's right, George is part Jewish).

And it's funny this week when you see his number one pick. No, it's not
Duke, UNC, or even Georgia Tech. Read on and you'll be as surprised as
George was.

George did post something last week, but from what we understand it got
munged some place (probably his own machine). Anyway, we'll include both
week's stats for your edification. George did about average and continues
to do about average (He's just an average kind of guy, hey). What really
is neat is that he has consistently picked the correct team (not necessarily
the points) about 86 percent of the time. We're kind of proud! Here
are his stats for the past two weeks:

  Dates     0-4  5-9  10-14  15-19  20-24  25-up  ||    Ws     Ls    LPs   Total
2/10-2/16    48   32    21     11      4      3   ||    59     27     33    119
2/17-2/23    47   33    15      7      3      4   ||    49     23     37    109
Season      410  360   207    116     44     25   ||   567    264    331   1162

After some 12 weeks atop the Top Twenty (or so) we are pleased to say that
North Carolina has fallen on their proverbial Tar Heels. Please, a moment of
silence......Thank you very much.

But to our surprise (and chagrin you could say - right Beth?), Duke is not our
number one this week. It is (believe it or not) the Fighting Irish of
Notre Dame!!!

Notre Dame!!?????!!! No, George has not flipped a bit. Notre Dame had a
great week last week picking up four points. They moved from 10th to 6th
to now number one. The rest of the list is more reasonable. The one exception
is St. John's which dropped from 9th to 19th by losing big time to DePaul.
Here is George's list for this week.

            George's Top Twenty (or so) - Week Fifteen

 1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6) 12. Virginia Cavaliers (13)
 2. Duke Blue Devils (2) 13. North Carolina State Wolfpack (23)
 3. North Carolina Tar Heels (1) 14. Iowa Hawkeyes (*)
 4. Louisville Cardinals (5)            15. Georgetown Hoyas (14)
 5. Kansas Jayhawks (3)                 16. Purdue Boilermakers (*)
 6. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (7) 17. Indiana Hoosiers (15)
 7. Kentucky Wildcats (8)               18. Memphis State Tigers (11)
 8. Michigan Wolverines (4)             19. St. John's Redmen (9)
 9. Michigan State Spartans (19) 20. Alabama Crimson Tide (20)
10. Syracuse Orangemen (10)             21. Arizona Wildcats (21)
11. Oklahoma Sooners (12)

Well, two weeks remain til the end of the season. Some seasons are over
with already. The Sun Belt Conference has their tournament at the end
of this week. Other conference tournaments are next week and other teams
continue to play regular games (they think they're too good to have
conference tournaments :-) ). The race to Dallas is heating up. North
Carolina got beat (to put it bluntly) bad this past week and are trying
to hold on to a part of the conference championship. Kansas and Oklahoma
are scrapping it out as I type this for a big seed in the NCAAs. Other
games are just as important. Here are some of mention this week:
Like I said above Kansas goes into Norman Monday night, to get the tourney
legs ready (Oklahoma by 2). Notre Dame puts it's (ahem) number one ranking
on the line while hosting the Blue Demons of DePaul (Irish by 22 - but
probably won't be that big, DePaul wants to save face). The Big East
regular season title goes on the line Wednesday night as Syracuse takes on
St. John's (Syracuse by 2 - good game to watch). Also Wednesday, UNC tries
to save face as they host upset-minded Virginia (UNC by 10 - about right).
Thursday, Georgia Tech wants to back into the ACC champion title two years
in a row badly and will have a tough time hosting N.C. State at the Waffle
Iron (The Omni for all you ill informed). Tech seems to peaking but I really
don't mean that so I won't jinx my team (Tech by 8 - again, about right).
On Saturday, the regular season starts winding down and the teams start
jockeying for NCAA bids. A big game to witness for this is Maryland
hosting Virginia. Both teams beat the number one (at the time) Tar Heels
and want the committee to remember that (Maryland by 2 - might even go
to overtime). And on Sunday two big conference champions will be crowned.
In the ACC, UNC invades Crazy Cameron and intends to demolish Duke
(George says Duke by 7 - I hope he's wrong). The other conference race to
be decided will be the Metro. Memphis State travels to Louisville to
face the Cards. George says Louisville by 11 but it will be a lot closer
than. The Tigers had a minor setback at Tallahassee last week but other
than that, they seem to be peaking for the tournament.

Well, that will do it for this week. Boy, that felt good. I haven't
analyzed the race in a long time. I hope you all find it informative and
thought provoking (and post provoking). It's been fun. Til next time,
have a good week.
